Sick Dog

My dog is 14 years old going to be 15 in March. She has no past illnesses or any other problems, but sometime Saturday between 10am-12pm she threw up 3 times and I found her downstairs laying on the ground drooling everywhere and her eyes were bouncing left to right while blinking. She wasn't really able to walk and when she tried she looked drunk. I took her to an emergency vet and they said it was Idiopathic vestibular disease basically vertigo. They gave her fluids and gave us meds to give her but she isn't getting better. Her walking is worse, she doesn't even want to stand and she will not eat or drink. I have been giving her water through a syringe every couple of hours. I'm going to take her to the vet again but has anyone every experienced this?

Here are some pics of her before she got sick.

How strange. Are you taking her to her regular vet? Idiopathic is not a comforting word.

oh dear...I am so sorry your furbaby is not well..I really hope she starts to feel more herself soon.

She's a beauty btw :)

Sorry to hear about your pretty girl having problems.
From the symptoms ... It sounds like the vet/s may be correct, on diagnosis, though it probably wouldn't hurt to rule out anything else.
If you would like to read up on what the vet/s was/were talking about ... Check out the following links:
http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/vestibular.html
http://neuro.vetmed.ufl.edu/neuro/vestibular/vestib.htm
These are just a couple of links but you can, also, do a search on "vestibular disease dog", for more links, if you'd like to see/read more.

The second link provided by Pasodama is a lot of reading, but very good info. I would be quite concerned about her not drinking more than anything else right now. I'm sure you are anyway but I have to say, try to keep her hydrated. Definitely call your regular vet when you can and have them check her out as well.

Bit of an odd post, but I've had vertigo and I'm not surprised she's not moving, eating or drinking. Health-wise it wasn't viewed as a serious condition by the medical men, but the world spins and you feel permanently seasick. I felt wretched for weeks.

I can't help thinking she ought to be given some help with fluids if she's not drinking of her own volition. Another vet's opinion would be comforting. Good luck and keep us posted.

Just wanted to give a quick opinion -

Working in veterinary medicine for 5 years has given me the opportunity to see many cases of vestibular syndrome. Some cases are much worse then others, but 99% of dogs do recover. It is not that odd that she is not eating or drinking, as long as she gets her fluids, she most likely will be ok. Now, in extreme cases, even once the dog recovers as much as its going to, there still might be a head tilt and they might slow down a bit. I have never seen a case where a dog has not recovered.

Best of luck!

Thanks for all the replies, she is doing a little better. She has been getting up and walking a tiny bit. She still won't eat or drink, but she's getting better.

So sorry to hear your lovely girlie is not well, she will be fine i think, she looks like a Shepherd, is that right? I have a long coated shepherd named Kiera, she is the love of my life.
Marg.

Thanks everyone, we called the vet yesterday she wasn't in so she called back today and said we have to try force feeding her since she still won't eat or drink, and if that doesn't work they will have to tube feed her. So we will see how things go. She is alot more active, but she is still wobbly and still has her head tilt.

She is one big mutt her mother was a chow mix and the father was a mix breed stray. The mother was 1 years old and had 13 puppies. The puppies looked like german sheppards, huskies and labs. So we think she is chow, lab, sheppard, and huskiy mix but it's hard to know since both were mutts.

aww poor girl. I hope she feels better soon. She looks like me when my vertigo was bad. Poor gal. I hope there will be a good update soon :) Give her a pet for me.

Well, I'm glad that she's feeling better! Please do keep us posted on her condition.

Best wishes, thoughts and prayers...

Fred
