Last night when I was changing my birds food and water, I noticed that he was acting a little weird. I was looking at him and holding him, and he was just looking really lethargic. He usually has attitude and a lot of personality, so I was really worried. I let my boyfriend look at him, and Sparky(my bird) let him touch him and hold him. Sparky normally HATES my boyfriend and will bite him if he comes too close. This made me really worried. And since I know birds don't act sick till they're practically dead, I got really freaked out. So I called the emergency vet and took him in. Now I'm really stressed out..The emergency vet for a visit was $170..Everything will probably come out to $400-$800 depending on what he needs. They don't know what's wrong with him, but they said it's good I brought him in..And I was worried I was being over paranoid. He might have a bacterial infection or might have swallowed some metal or he might have chlamydia..They don't know. So they have to do blood work and might have to do an x-ray. The x-ray will really worry me since they said they have to put him under anastesia for it. And I know birds stress out over that. And he's a green cheek conure, so he's small. I don't know. I'm really worried about my baby. :( And since I'm a college student, I don't have money for groceries now. But he comes first, just like a kid.

I take my hat off to you.. wow your vet is really expensive, over here in england we would be able to buy the vets for $800 lol, anyways i hope he gets well soon, you seem like a Really good pet owner.. i guess people who are on here and are trained vets will see how handy there skill is when they need it, and how effective it can be when somone has to spend alot of money on there advise : )

If it makes you feel any better, my pigeon Dill has had anaesthesia three times, and my daughter's Senegal has had anaesthesia three times, and both were fine. It's very scary, I know. I hope he's ok! It's a bad sign when they are friendlier than usual.

I hope he is okay! Sounds like you did the right thing taking him to the vet. Fingers crossed he'll be fine - keep us updated.

Depends what you (or your animal!) has done ;) Sure, treatment for a cat bite or something wouldn't cost you $800, but a big operation or a broken leg or something can cost a fortune. It's all relative - the cost of treatment will presumably depend on what Sparky needs to get better. ;)
 
Good luck with Sparky. I know it's tough, but you're doing everything you can. Send him warm thoughts and give him a "big kiss on the lips"(in my best Aussie accent :) ) when he comes home.

I just got him back from the hospital and he's doing better. He has a high white blood cell count which means he has some kind of infection but they don't know what. They have him on antibiotics. He's more alert and acting more normal. They wanted to do more tests and take more x-rays of him and do an ultra sound on his belly..They think something could be inflamed in his abdomen..But I said lets see how the antibiotics do and see how he is in 7-10 days. They would've charged me 200 more for that, and I just finished paying 422 already. But I think the antibiotics will work since he seems to be doing better. :)
 
The question is, if something was inflammed in his belly, what would it be and would it be treatable, and can they do the same treatment (like antibiotics) without diagnosing it?

Yeah, they said they wouldn't know till they knew if something was and what is inflamed. And they might need something different than the antibiotics he's taking now. I really don't have any more money to be spending..I'm just praying that these antibiotics he's on now work. And it really stresses him out when I give him them 'cause he totally hates it. I'm just keeping him in his cage so he can rest. I told them to go ahead and test him for chlamydia too..Because I do handle other Green cheeks and such at work. So maybe I might have brought something home..I dunno. I just hope whatever it is goes away..
He's still not acting totally normal..But he has more energy than before. But you can never tell with birds.

Lisa says sounds like a bacterial infection.
Chlamydia is easy to rule out.
What kind of cage is he in? Beware of Zinc.

Yeah, I already said they could send the test in for chlamydia..So I have to pay $50 for that on the checkup. I hope it is a bacterial infection so it can just be treated now. I'm not sure what his cage is made of..I explained what it looked like to the vet and they weren't worried. They did an x ray of him awake and they found no metal in his body.
