Snake escape -.-

Merkavich

LIVIN' THE PUG LIFE
I knew Panzer would be trouble, once I realized how much of a climber he was..good news is he was found in a roller blade in the closet. (Other than my tanks, those are the only things in the room, so I had a feeling before I checked).

However, what gets me is he escaped from a "secured" zilla tank. It had the lid locks on and everything. I've looked around the lid, and can't see a single hole he could escape from.

Lesson learned. Although I wanted to wait till he got bigger to change tanks, I moved him to a 20 gallon zoo med, which I fully trust. Although their price and size was perfect for yearlings, I won't buy the Zilla starter kits again...I just don't trust their lids even with those lock clips.

This is his old tank he escaped from, now vacant:

i noticed with my tanks that are similar, the lids don't fit snug...if it is shifted to the front or back, there is a tiny gap...enough for a baby corn to fit through...my lavender escaped mine and was gone for a month...i hot glued aquarium airline along the one side and made it fit snug...no more escapes :)

That's not the Zilla tanks with the secure lid, the one I usually see recommended is the one with the sliding lid.
I don't like the ones that require the clamps, but I managed to keep my snakes in those tanks by taping shut the edges of the lid, where the gaps are for cables, and putting 12 packs of soda on the tops of the lids. Lol. Glad you found your baby safe!!

Is there a zilla tank with a sliding lid? the zoo meds are the only ones like that that I've seen. I'll have to do something about them as well, (the glue gun sounds like a good idea lol) I'd hate to just not use the tanks because I'm paranoid my snakes will get out. Ali, I also have some random objects on the coral snows tank lid lol. He is still in his zilla..though hes not sneaky like the opal is.

I would suggest using at least 4 clips on the lid. When we had tanks we used the same thing only we used 4 clips and never had a problem. 2 on each end, about 2 inches from the corners

I have a minimum of four clips on my King's viv, 6 on Palpatine's, and Captain's has the sliding top that I have a small padlock on when I'm not home. Never had an unsupervised escape ( knock on wood).

Thanks guys, I'll have to go back to the store and get some extra clips, hopefully this prevents any future escapes for my other guys. :)

No way! That's the EXACT tank I have. And my baby is a climber. How old is yours? I might have to take some more precautions as well.

TOTALLY AGREE. The problem is that you only had the clips on the one corner OP, so there is a weak spot at the back - I can almost guarantee you that is the scene of the crime.
I actually very much love the clips as locks (maybe one of the only few who do)!!
When you have the 4 that are required and each is at a corner, they are amazing. The only thing is you have to unclip them slowly as they can make a snapping sound, which can frighten the snakes if they aren't used to it.

yeah I agree 100%, I also like the clips! they can be a bit noisy but I have notised that the snakes get used to it! lol Sirius doesn't even budge anymore. and Arbers getting much better! :)

but yes you need 4 minimum on each of the corners, lol 6 is probably even better.
but I love them! their quick to open and close. BUT I am going to be switching Sirius into an exo terra with two front doors soon! (can't wait!!) so I'll see how much I like them after I've used the terra for a while!!! ;)

should be interesting!

My little guy seems fine with the snapping noise from the clips (surprisingly). And I have to say that I like them quite a bit too although I don't fully trust them! I have 6 on (he's not escaping any time soon ;)) and even though he was a climber at the beginning and was always on the ledge between the lid and side of the tank, he seems to have settled in.
4 seems like a good number although even with 6, I still have textbooks on top. Good luck and hopefully there will be no more unsupervised escapes!

The coral, which is the only snake I have who is still in one of these tanks, seems okay with the sounds. They are loud though, I kinda cringe whenever I have take them off :/

I've moved the 2 locks from the the opals old tank to the corals, so now he has 4, (one on each corner) though he seems to have no interest in escaping, nor in climbing. He'll be getting his own 20 gallon with the preferred sliding lid after Christmas, as he seems to be growing.

One of my tanks is a basic 15L (same footprint as a 20 tall), and use cage clips without anything else set on top of the screen. Even though my snake liked getting up there and exploring the inside rim, he never got out of it. It might just fit snugly on my particular tank, but when I move the screen around to check it, there's no gaps. I use the clips just to be safe, though, as I have two cats. I'm not worried that they'd get into or on top of the cage- I trained them to stay away from it, they don't even sit next to it, no curiosity about it any more whatsoever- but my girl cat, Tem, would probably hunt my snake if he got out. I don't think she'd intentionally hurt him, but she'd probably just try to play with him like he was a toy.

My other tank has a sliding screen top that latches into place with two built in clips on the back side, and the front has a spot for a padlock. I don't feel it's necessary to padlock it yet as Ugjat can't reach the screen (there's nothing he can climb leading up there and he's still too small to reach it by slithering up one of the sides). When he's bigger, I may decide to put a lock on it, though.
