A friend of mine took this pic at the Everglades last weekend. I think its a diamondback or pigmy but he thinks its a hognose... any input?

Kinda looked like a southern hoggie to me, until I saw the face. The dusky pygmies usually have a darker head than that, if I remember correctly. Could be a young EDB. :shrugs:

I was also thinking pigmy, Eric after I posted this. I am actually leaning more that way now. Its hard to tell scale of the picture.

I think it's a pygmy rattler. Doesn't have the correct pattern to be a diamondback. Look at the head. Pygmies are in the genus, Sistrurus, as are massasaugas. They have distinctive head patterns like this one from Michigan...

I've never seen.....

a Florida Dusky Pygmy of that color. More indicative of Carolina pygmies. Not to say that wouldn't pop up here from time to time.
Susan catch me one if you're gettin that coloration please.

Typical Florida color and just for fun, a few of the Reds from Carolina....

WOW!! And I thought the ones I usually see were very pretty! The ones I see tend to have just a touch of pink more than the one in the photo the OP provided, but no where near that awesome red! I would have some in my collection if they weren't hot, but the next one I find, I'll try to catch it and keep it for you until you can come and pick it up.

Put me on the list...I really need to get one of these for my education work....and that goes for a coral snake too! ;)

Beauties for sure.....

Thanks Susan.
Craig, that pygmy in your post #11 is beautiful.

Can't take to much credit for it, got it from another site, Daniel from Sunshine Serpents I believe.

Crap, I caught three this year. I hold one if I get another chance.
