snake size

ok, so I have said this before but ohwell. my corn that is a year and a half is small for it's size (only eats 2 pinkies every 6 days, every 6 days cause I want to get her back to where she should be in size) she was with the breeder for a year which only feeds enough to keep alive almost so they dont lose money like alot of breeders do, but most people get their corns as hatchlings so it doesnt' affect them, well I got mine at a year old, and it is small for it's age, like 20 something inches, pretty much the same lenght as my 7 month year old corn, although the older one is thicker and stronger, still small. so will she continue to grow normally(based on genetics) if I keep feeding her every 6 days? I feed her one day sooner than I normally woudl with this one because I want to get her back up to the game. she can take a fuzzy, just never tried, only have done two big pinkies every 6 days. well anyway, just wondering if because she started out eating small amounts, if this will affect anything. TY sorry for such a long post, hope I didnt' waste your time.

Your snake most definitely needs to be on larger prey. A snake that age isn't getting the proper nutrition off of two pinkies! Two pinkies = one fuzzy.

Get on with it! ;)

Might even be ready for 2 fuzzies...most people UNDERfeed their snakes...a snake can easily digest a good amount of prey...especially on a once a week feeding.

I have a 26 inch king that eats 3 hoppers every week...she would be on small mice...just haven't made it to the swap yet this month...LOL

She is only as big around as my thumb.

man, mine is as big is my thumb prolly too, and yours is and you feed hoppers? I guess I will get fuzzys first, and then see how she takes those, next time I go up to the breeder I'll get fuzzys. Hey, what about a 7 month year old, she is still on two pinkies, but I dont know when to bump up with her, I know she coudl probably take a fuzzy, but I dont know what the average age is for fuzzys. THanks

I have to admit curiousity about this thread too. I don't know for sure how old Legoless is, but he has an appetite...that's for sure. He's about as big around as a 1st grader's pencil, and ravenously eats 2 pinkies weekly, and looks for more later. I bought fuzzies, but they sure look terribly big. I was somehow expecting fuzzies to be just that...peachy-fuzzy. These are fully furred and look like wee mice. Thanks for sharing your advice and experience!

Some places grade their fuzzies in two sizes...some mix them all in one bag...

I have a 10" kingsnake that is smaller around than a pencil and eating 2 small pinkies every 5 days...

Wow guys. I've only been feeding my 18inch corn one pinkie every 5 days... Looks like I'm underfeeding..? :nope: ...?

I will stress this again...length really has nothing to do with prey size...girth is what should be used to approzimate prey size. Prey items should be 1 to 1.5 times the size of the snake at it's largest point. All snakes are individuals...so some may eat more...and some may eat less...or prefer different sizes...but if you pay attention to it at feeding time...you will be able to tell if it is satisfied or still hungry.

yea, I think he probably woud eat two. He usually crawls around a lot after eating one. So maybe he wants another.. I think I'll feed him one his time and then if he acts hungry I'll see if he takes another.. But for Now I haven't feed him for a week since he's in shed... Out of blue stage. He should shed today or at the latest tomorrow I HOPE.

i picked up a fuzzy for my normal. if she seems to be looking for more i'll just give her a pinkie with it. do 7 month year olds usually take fuzzys? mine eats two pinks and still seems like she's hungry. the fuzzy i got today is not twice the size of my 7 month, maybe i'll feed both of them fuzzys for now on.

Wow, so if Monty is about 1.5" in girth at his biggest point then he could eat something 3" to 4" around? I didn't measure him, I figured he was about the size of my pinkie (I have small fingers) and measured my finger. I'll post about that tho.

wow, thanks alot CAV, now I know mine isn't too young, I knew she could take them but didn't know about her stomach taking it and such. THanks

I would say 1.5"-2.25" or so...should be able to take a medium mouse, I would think.

You want to go about 1-1.5 times the largest point...

I have a king that isn't even an inch...she eats 3 hoppers...and looks for more...will be switching her to adult mice PRONTO...

Wow, I had no idea he could eat something that big. I got him a dozen pinkies, I'll start giving him 2. Once he's done with those I'll get him fuzzies. Wow. And here I thought he was teeny tiny. LOL Actually the guy in the store put one mouse in there that is kinda fuzzy, he told me to give Monty 1 pinky the first feed, 2 the next 4 feedings, and the give him the biggest one, so maybe that's where he has Monty going anyway? I'll have to be sure I'm getting him the right size next time.

Maybe I should define my meaning of girth and the sizes represented (although it should work either way).

When you say he is 1.5" I am assuming you mean in diameter (straight through) rather than in circumference (around the outside). Although either measurement should work out now that I think about it...but a small mouse has a MUCH greater circumference than diameter...

But I assume you get my drift...

Hope you don't mind me hopping in on this. Is there a health diffrence in feeding a rat pup to a hopper mouse? I was underfeeding my snake badly untill couple months ago and think i have now corrected the problem but i often feed rat pups (which are about same in size) is there a nutritional diffrence?
