i read somewhere that a snake is just as difficult to maintain as a dog... I kinda disagree... and here's why:

Dog:
feed in morning
put water in morning
take out to bathroom in evening
play with in evening
give food in evening
add water in evening
bathe on saturday
grooming once every 2 months
heart worming medicine 1/month

Snake:
play with a little every day
water once a week
food once a week
replace bedding 1/month

what do y'all think???

You're kidding, right?
Dogs need to go outside at least 3 times a day to go to the bathroom, and 4 times is better.

And snakes don't NEED to be played with...at all!
But change the bedding once a week.

Snake

1) Won't bark at 2am to go out....
2) Won't chew up your shoe
3) Doesn't have to feed every day
4) Really doesn't care if you don't play with it everyday
5) Much less clean up
6) Low maint. - virtually no grooming required
7) Doesn't require squeaky/stuffed toys or other treats/snacks
8) Has a contained habitat
9) Doesn't have to be licensed by the city (yet) or affect my insurance rates (yet)
10) Won't do the nasty on a visitors leg

Don't get me wrong, I love my dog.

Oh I totally agree that dogs are more of a handful than snakes. Dogs require a LOT of attention and handling, whereas snakes do not.

And as Dee said... I love my dogs, but that doesn't mean I think caring for them is easy. Nor would I ever have more than one or two at once, waaaaay too much work. :p

Let's put it this way, How many of you own 5 or more snakes, and how many of you own five or more dogs? There is no comparison, my one dog is much more work than all of my snakes combined. In a sense though, I love the time it takes working with my dog, and cleaning tanks and feeding snakes, well... not so much. I love my snakes very much, and they bring a peaceful joy to me when I hold them. And I don't know about everyone else's dogs, but mine is a 2yr old German Shepherd. That means hours a day of training, excercise, food and water, going to the bathroom, affection, etc... I think a part time job is easier than my dog, literally. But dogs are the best, and all of the work, I mean ALL of the work, is worth it.

The poll made me laugh. My dogs are so much more trouble than my few snakes, but there are definitely pros and cons to each. However, my dogs are so much more expensive and work intensive than my scaly pets.

Now, if you ask me which is easier to maintain, three dogs or 14 fish tanks, I'll take the dogs any day.

100% snake all the way. I've already told my wife, and she agreed, that once our three dogs kick off, It'll be nothing but herps from then on out. we love our dogs, and you really cant watch TV and fall asleep with your snake on the couch, but the upkeep and constant worry with a dog can get old.

Snakes are SO much easier. At my parents house, we had 2 dogs (one mutt, one black/yellow lab mix), a cat (stray that became an INSIDE cat), an umbrella cockatoo (LOUDEST creature on the planet when it wanted attention), a rabbit (kinda stayed in its cage), somewhere around 50 koi in a pond in the front yard, and the 3 snakes I had when I lived there (mom didn't go anywhere near 'em). I'll take the 25 snakes I have now over that menagerie any day.

Snake is obviously easier, but a dog more of an interactive pet. Which do you think a 9-year old would prefer, a betta or a pony?

Easy solution.... get a blue-tongued skink. They're a somewhat interactive pet, without all the work required to care for a dog. But that's just me... I think BTS are awesome. :p
