snakes for xmas... RANT

Some of the people I work with, have younger kids and what not.. Somewheres down the road, they figured I deal with corns and other snakes.. Of course a couple of my co workers kids wanted snakies.. Hench they came to me.. Took some explaining what the snakes needed to thrive etc, and told them the longest amount of time the corns can live, and suggested to them that if they kids really wanted snakes they needed to get a book or two about them before I would sell them.. Of course the co workers still have a snakeless house..

Regards.. Tim of T and J

My first corn was a birthday gift.
but it was because I was doing research months in advanced, and basically forced it onto my parents haha.

When the week before my birthday came, and my parents dident have anything to give me they caved in and took me to the pet store and let me pick one out and get everything for it.

I hate seeing people be given animals they dont know how to take care of. Or when I'm in the petstore I see people come in and be like oh I want to get this snake and I can show it off, freak people out, and look though blah blah blah. lmao I usually hear this around the baby ball python tanks, which actually makes me laugh a lot because idk how tough you would look with a ball python thats under a foot long and still thin. XD

The idea Jenni posted is great, It makes it more exciting when you actually get the animal.

If anyone is getting any pet for their child as a present at least they should know the care basics so they can teach the child how to propery care for it.

I feel bad for the boa and the retic the OP posted about
they are probably going to end up given up when they are larger, or not cared for properly. Well I guess its the same as any other serious pet, most end up abandoned.

Snakes for christmas is a nice idea for the experienced enthusiast like most of us corn addicts here. But I don't think any pet for anyones christmas is a good idea generally... look at all the abandoned animals each year - Christmas is the most crowded time of year for rescue shelters etc.

Actually heres a wee story. A lass I am at college with was telling me ever so crudley about her pal who has a "big spikey lizard" - beardie. He bought a leo and put it in the viv with the beardie as a snack, filmed it and put it on youtube cause it was "so damn funny" (in her words). I could have smacked her in the face until she went on to tell me this same friend was getting her a baby beardie for christmas. I went on to explain how complicated their setups are, and how expensive it is to do it properly (trying to put her off of course). She proceeded to tell me her mate has given her advice and shes already got the "fish tank" set up with a heat mat and a hot rock. Well I just about died but what can I do. I told her if she needs help I will come over and set it up myself (with advice from a pal who has experience with beardies - I don't know much about them).

Theres just some people who insist on being idiotic no matter what you say and do.

Awww... Considering I just got Steve, this made me really sad.

Sometimes the stupidity exhibited by the "smartest animals on Earth" just amazes me.

Ugh! This peeves me too! I work in a petstore, and this time of year I turn into the biggest grinch..."NONONONONO" I manage to steer the 'last minute bad idea' people away...but it's disheartening when it dawns on people that herps (and fish)are not just decorations for thier home/office/ego *grumble* Today I had a woman come in, a family member had given her young son a hatchling Red Ear Slider. She was in a panic, and had come straight from family members house to my store. She didn't have tank, filter anything, in fact she had it in her pocket! I was ticked (not at her) but how in the hell did anyone sell a turtle to anyone that was to be given as a gift, and with no care information or supplies?!! grrrr/end rant

Well, I bought my first cornsnake on a whim but was smart enough to ask a lot of questions before I took it home. Then the first thing I did was go online to find out more about my new pet and voila....got here. I do have a peeve with people who don't even bother to find out more about their exotic pet, petstores that give out incorrect information, stores that sell a completely inapropriate pet to someone just to make a buck and people who post on Yahoo answers to find out if the foam coming out of their snakes mouth is normal and what should I do!!??? Thank goodness cornsnakes are tough critters! Most of us would have probably killed them off before we knew what we were doing if they weren't! :)

oooh, speaking of pockets! i have a little tale too.

one day a girl came into my store, with 3 baby GUINEA PIGS in her pocket!! she then proceeded to tell us how she got the baby... a pet store in the city sold her a 3-story cage, with ramps and all that, and THREE guinea pigs! they told her they were all males (which in itself is a bad idea, they can get into really nasty brawls. in fact, more than 1 guinea pig in the same cage is a bad idea) but, of course there was a female, and of course there are now babies. she told us she wanted us to take the 2 guinea pigs who "weren't tame" or else she was going to let them go!! WHERE she was going to let them go, i have noooo idea, but they wouldn't have made it. so of course she guilted us into taking them, we had to quarantine them and pay for them to get checked out. now this isn't completely the customers fault... the pet store should NOT have sold her 3 guinea pigs, let alone 3 guinea pigs in ONE cage! also, they should have known what SEX the guinea pigs are! but, the owners should also have assumed responsibility, and not said such horrible things such as they were going to LET THE GUINEA PIGS GO! some people just make me siiiiiick!

Aren't people like this the reason bunnies have taken over Australia? :sidestep:

No, actually the mass extermination of snakes was the reason for bunny overpopulation, but that's beside the point....Some people have this bizarre idea that animals would be happy in the wild....Be free little guinea pig to run in a totally innapropriate habitat with animals that will have you for dinner....be FREEEEEEEE! <cue theme from Born Free>

Ahhh...

By the way, personally, I think anyone who believes that the domestic cat/dog would be happier being free is just nuts. Cats are lazy and rather be fed and pampered (although hunting is fun when they feel like it)... not to mention having a nice cozy place to sleep. Dogs just like people too much. :shrugs:

My cat THINKS he wants to be free. He's an indoor cat and is forever trying to get out. He managed to slip out one night and was gone for 3 days. Freaked us out and we thought he was gone forever. Showed up one night at about 1 in the morning meeowing to be let in. He didn't want to go near the door for about a week....but now he's back at it!

Well I think an "outdoor" cat is different from a "free" cat. I have an outdoor cat who can be brought in during horrible weather but come morning...SHE HOWLS and bites until you let her out. My mother has a barn cat who would not come in if you had steak slices in your hands, but she also has an indoor cat who is terrified of an open window.

:eek1: I click on thread called 'snakes for xmas... RANT' and the latest posts are about cats being indoor/outdoor! I think this board has ADD...

Nah... all the snakes are in burmation, so we're just bored.

Pretty soon it will be breeding season and you get to see pictures of snakies doing naughty things. Until then, no one has a life! :grin01:

Coming in late but I wanted to say we've been preparing to get a corn for months and arranged to get our corn from the breeder and when we met him my brother paid for the snake for a Christmas present for my son. It was really perfect and wonderful. So there are ways to give pets as a gift and do it well but the, "Surprise, here is a multi-year responsibility for a present" way really sucks.

I agree with this. Probably because this is how I got my first corn, Kalenya. I had been researching for four years, on ths site, reading books, etc. Finally my parents took me to a reptile expo this year- three days after my birthday- and got Kel and supplies. It was nice because it was really a 'gift' from them, but I was fully (if not over) prepared for it.
