Snakes on the move in north Florida

Friday Connie and I came home from a trip up to the Washington D.C. area and were met with heavy rain here in north Florida. Towards evening we had to run out to the post office, and along the way saw two corn snakes on the road. Both normal colored, but one was DOR, unfortunately. The other I picked up and moved over to the side of the road. He didn't seem real concerned about being handled, and we didn't see him flattened on the road when we came back from the post office. Both were about 3 ft. long.

Then on Saturday we took a walk along out nature trail and spotted a small green snake (about 18 inches long) crossing the path in front of us.

The gopher tortoise burrows are all showing signs of activity, but we haven't actually seen any of them wandering about yet. Did spot a box turtle a week or so ago, and of course the lizards are always running around. But haven't seen our family of skinks yet.

It's raining pretty hard right now, so I suspect snake will be on the move on the roads again this evening. Perhaps I should be lugging around my camcorder on those walks Connie and I take. I imagine we'll run across a diamondback or coral snake shortly, as there seems to be a healthy population of both of them around here from evidence we have seen in the past. I ran into a black racer a couple of weeks ago that acted like it had never seen a human being before. He was a bit nervous but allowed me to get close enough that I could have grabbed him with my hands had I wanted to. I just told him to stay away from the house where our skinks and other lizards live and shooed him away. Hmm, maybe he didn't listen to me and that explains why I haven't seen the skinks yet....

Surprisingly enough the mosquito population isn't all that bad around here now. I would have thought with the rains we've been getting that it would be REALLY bad out there. But the yellow fly season will soon be here, and those are pretty nasty buggers that try hard to ruin a walk outside.

Those yellow flies are some persistent bugs! My parents live in Steinhatchee and when we take the boat out, they will follow us out ten miles into the Gulf. It takes a few smacks to kill them and it's like they're immune to bug spray and deet.

I was out looking at gopher tortoise burrows on the shotgun range a couple weekends ago- one of the rainy days. I was really happy to see a baby burrow. So I'm looking at the ground, at a milkweed plant, wishing it was in my yard, and there was a cornsnake RIGHT in front of me! How cool! Only the second living one I've seen, here.

I have been watching a couple of lizards running around outside my college... From a distance one looked like an Anole of some sort, and the other I am pretty sure was a Collared Lizard. I think I may have also seen a glimpse of a Horned lizard..

I saw another couple of DOR corns on route 319 over the last couple of days. Also saw a DOR diamondback out on route 20 west of Tallahassee.

Out at Ernie Caldwell....

I've seen another Ribbon snake but am catching two racers a day. Now a 5-6ft gator has showed up underneath the bridge.

On Wednesday I saw a gator crossing route 267. Then on Thursday I saw a gray rat snake on my dirt road not far from my driveway, and then a DOR blotched king on route 267.

Connie found a green snake crawling across the path between the carport and the house on Thursday.

Sure seems to be a lot of critters on the move lately....

I have definitely been seeing a lot of snakes moving around here in Central FL. Just this past week: cottonmouth, eastern diamondback, pygmy rattler, corn snake, coachwhip, black racer, ribbon snake, and yellow rat. Still hoping to see an indigo!
