I went out last night to get dog food and to check and see if a local pet store had and live pinkies we went over to where they keep the reptiles. they had a few snakes they had what looked like a king snake and a few boas i looked at one boa and he looked like he was in shed but only part of his body was duller. then we seen another and he had shed but still had patches of scales that didnt come off and one was clump was over his eye still and then another was on its back i wanted to say something but no one would come around i was  i couldnt believe that these people dont take care of the animals its like they dont care how do they get away with it??

Not only that but you can get a much nicer morph from a breeder than you usually can at a pet store for the same price, that is healthy eating well etc. Even though most people start out in the hobby with a pet store purchase, it's always nice to see someone do the research first. If I saw an animal on its back at a petstore I would be so mad

To me, it is difficult to make generalizaions like that. I can see what you are saying, and some pet stores do not keep their animals well, but then again other pet stores are clean well staffed, and knowledgeable. My local Petco is a good store, and the people there seem to know about the animals, and the critters are clean and well fed.

i wanted to ask them to get it out so i could see it but i didnt know if i could just pull it off or if he/she had to be moist to take it off

ya our petco is too they had three nice looking corns and some boas when i went there last night after the other local store. they were all bright and altert.

My first few snakes were Petco snakes, as well as my two Leopard Geckos that came before them. I see what you're saying, as I have seen some deplorable living conditions at some pet store, but not all are bad.
Heck, I've seen MANY vendors at shows that couldn't rival the care that my first snakes got at Petco (Though it's new staff now, who don't do the best job :(). But at first, when they had a great staff, knowledgeable people there to help, etc... It was worth the extra price just to buy from them, because I knew that all of the snakes/reptiles were in good shape.

It really depends on the individual store, because even chains like Petco have a lot of diversity in how well there animals are taken care of.

We have a few pet stores around here, but we do most of our shopping at an independently owned store that is AMAZING. The staff actually know how to properly care for the animals living there; most of their snakes aren't co-habitating (occasionally we see two baby corns in the same tank, but it's rare); and they aren't afraid to tell a customer 'No, I don't think this will be the right pet for you.'

However, about seven minutes away, we have a Petco that is almost the exact opposite. It really depends on how worried about the well-being of the animals the owners and managers are and how picky they are when they're hiring their staff.
