So much hostility

So yesterday, I take Pinky out his "room" and put him in the bathtub so I can clean his viv. For the first time, I shut off the light. He was looking to hide when I took him out of his viv so I figured I would put him in the dark.

After cleaning, I went to get him. Apparently he was sleep, and he rattled his tail when I went to grab him. I left him alone for a while. I went back in there and he looked like he was sleep again. So I just left him in there overnight.

Now I go to take him out again and he coiled at me. So rude. He's not usually so hostile. I don't know what's going on.

I JUST added a new UTH more appropriate for his tank size, a thermometer, and a thermostat in his viv yesterday. He has not had a chance to experience his new room makeover yet.

It's 77 degrees in my house right now, but he's inside the tub so that is much cooler.

How do I get him out without letting him bite me? I'm too chicken for that. In the past two years that I've had him, he hasn't been really hostile. My brother had him for his first four years, but never mentioned Pinky trying to bite him. Right now, he'll either act like a statute or like Cujo.

Update: I got him out of the tub and back in his vivarium with no injuries to either one of us. I remembered that I read somewhere to toss substrate on a snake before picking it up. I tried that. He was distracted as I dropped substrate down on him with one hand and at the same time, picked him up with the other hand.

In future, if you are really worried about getting bit, just wear garden gloves or something.

And also, if you do get bitten, it is no different than rubbing your hand on Velcro.

Another thing that can work is if you put one hand out near his face to get his attention and then use your other hand to go around the back and gently lift him.

I take the top of the screen and put it over their heads if they seem feisty and then reach for their bodies. You can also get a snake hook and stroke their bodies with it first before you handle. Usually the tail rattling is all show though. And its spring. I always feed heavier in the spring to help calm down the attitudes.

I can't believe you left your snake in the bathtub all night D:
I'd be so worried.

Anyhow, Riddle's going through a bratty stage right now. He's rattled his tail every time I went to take him out of his viv for the 2 weeks. I just pick him up and he is fine once he's out of the viv.
I think throwing bedding on him would just make him more stressed...

I agree, it would just confuse and scare him. Just open the viv and scoop him up with confidence. Make sure he is supported and he will learn that when you pick him up it isn't always bad!
