The San Francisco Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) has been classified an endangered species by United States Fish and Wildlife and is protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Beautiful garters! It's funny that in Germany and other parts of Europe the garter is a well thought of reptile and here they are often put down!

My adult garters get only Rat Pienks in different sizes.

fish is just a diversication for them.

the smaller ones get rat pieces and some fish.

I don't know why they would be looked down on- that's gotta be most kids' first exposure to snakes and field herping. All my tricks of the trade and techniques were refined on Garters. We'd go to the cabin Friday night, and I'd be out Saturday morning, hunting. First there was the Shingle Pile- _always_ guaranteed Garters and Five-Lined Skinks, maybe a Swift or Red Belly if you were lucky. I'd be out there flipping the shingles- the snakes loved it there! Then there were various old buildings and roofs and dumps and just plain walking down the dirt roads- I'd be out there all day. My daughter learned to love Garters before she was even potty trained! Garters are just excellent little snakes, if you ask me.

I think they are looked down upon as pets. I also think your post explains the reason for it. They are considered a child's plaything!

Is it illegal to keep captive born san francisco garters, in the us from other countries if you have proof or is it just all around illegal?

we in europe would like to have some us san franciscos.

cause our stock has some problems with inbreeding because its not possible to import some new blood...

interessting: in us its forbidden to breed san franciscos and the wild population is going to die out, and at the same time the really big population in europe, which could help to keep the natural population alive dies out, because of no fresh blood...

But if we were allowed to keep them here, people would find them in the wild and take them since you couldn't tell the difference. And I doubt people would want to give up all of thier expensive garters to the wild.
Sorry if that sounds mean

But, the reason a species is usually in trouble is loss of habitat, so if a good captive breeding population isn't established in the hands of hobbyists while there is time- the dwindling wild population eventually dies off, and we are left with nothing.
