I first stumbled on this site probably 2 years ago, and may have found myself here a handfull of times since. Back in '08 my then wife and 5 year old daughter came home with a corn snake.
My daughter had wanted a pet for a while, and I was happy to have a snake. I had a garter when I was a kid and have always loved snakes. My daughter named it Snakey, but unfortunately, though it ate 2 meals and shed once, it died for no apparent reason after 2 weeks. We woke up one morning and it was dead. It was always very docile and not very active. My daughter was devastated, and I promised we would get another snake.
I went back to Petco and picked this one myself. I picked the most active and healthiest looking corn in the tank. Snakey II came home on Feb 6th, 2008 and weighed in at 8 grams and 13" long. I'll try to find a pic of him then and post it. I say him because that's what I guessed from what I read at the time, but now I'm not so sure it's not a her. Snakey is now ready to shed, so no pics yet, but he/she is probably 4 1/2 feet now, and weighed 466 grams before his/her pre-shed feeding.
Everyone gets one post to make fun of Snakey's name, then NO MORE!;)
I already know I'm gonna have a blast here.

Good luck with your snake! Only one way to be certain if it's male or female and that is probing. Don't do this yourself but let it be done by a someone with experience.

What morph is he/she?
 
I believe it's just a normal. Once it sheds, I'll post some pix. I also want to try out the measuring program I downloaded from another thread. I tried to get a measurement in the cage when it was streched out, and came up with about 55". Snakey is a little thin right now. It seems that shedding has interupted feeding a lot this year, and it seems to take longer to shed.

Considering that my old roommates had a cat named "Mr. Kitty", and he was the most adorable thing ever, I have no room to make fun of you for Snakey's name!

Thats what I was going to name mine. My 2 year old cousin loooved her and that is what she called it but they her dad and mom flipped and was like dont let her see that thing or she will they are all nice and try to pick them up outside. I love my uncle and aunt but that ticked me off big time. I cant stand it when parents make kids think snakes are evil. Mine tried it on me but I am a rebel and I fell in love with them. So im happy to see you let your 5 year old get one
 
im not sure im with you on that nite... i can understand, i just about in the swamp see just as many vemonous around the house as non i think. if i had a child i wouldnt want them thinking all snakes are fine to handle, you said shes 2 so i can see where the parents would thing shed go to play with out outside because she thought they are all ok. you see one outside, even more so a child should go the other way. that dont sound to the point of all snakes being bad, they just feel shes to young to understand,
 
Boy, I'm glad I didn't have to put up with that stuff as a kid. My dad taught me to respect all animals, and not mess with them unless I knew what I was doing. I remember when I was about 6, we came home from the drive in and dad parked the car and said "everyone stay in the car". I watched him go into the garage and grab a hoe, then he came out and scooped up the 6-7' long diamondback that was laying in the driveway soaking up the heat. He walked it around back and dropped it in the gully behind the house. That was the biggest snake I ever saw for some time after that. I loved growing up in that house in San Jose. Saw all kinds of reptiles in that gully, including a few diamonbacks. They never scared me, and never bothered me. I did give them a wide berth, though.:sidestep:
 
As soon as i saw the name i thought of my nephew, he's 3 and we have a Deer target that we practice shooting bow at and i'm pretty sure that my nephew thinks it's a pet and he calls him Buckey since it has antlers lol. He's a lil cutie :)
 
Lol. I named our 3 corn snakes names that I like, however our bunny was already named when he came to us. He lived with another family and their small son named him Bunbun :p
I like the pic of your Snakey. None of ours are that big yet :)
