Strip Thermometers

Jessicat

All Pied Everything
Before purchasing a corn (which i hope to do very soon now that i'm ready!) I decided to set up a habitat and test out a heating pad's different settings to see what temperatures I would get from it. I grabbed a thermometer from outside and put it in the tank. It reached about 87 F on the medium setting. The thermometer wasn't mine personally so soon after I purchased a strip thermometer at a pet store. It has a color coded "system" to let you know how close to the number that shows up on the reading is to the actual temperature.

Brown means a few degrees lower then what the reading says.

The Strip thermometer is showing up as a brown 82 on the medium setting.
My question is can I rely on the strip thermometer for an accurate or close enough temperature reading? I don't want to guess on the temperature of my tank, I'd like to know for sure, and the mixed readings have kind of puzzled me.
Any advice would be great/helpful

I wouldn't rely on the strip type to be completely accurate. There are a number of places that sell better ones.

ooh i would like to thank you for that link cornman, a lot of very useful items there.
:)

the strip thermometers are meant to measure aquarium water temperature (though as it has been said, aren't accurate). they will measure the temperature of the glass rather then the air temperature. a digital thermometer is a great way to measure the temps in a viv.

I agree with the above posters - a strip is not accurate enough for your needs, whereas a digital thermometer will be perfect. If you get an indoor/outdoor one then you can measure the temperature of the cool end and the basking spot at the same time. It is also nice to have a min./max. feature to know these values too.

I us livefood a lot missy and they offer a cheapish (usually around £10) next day service as well as a good selection of F/T food. I get most of my snake stuff from their.
