Hello. gosh, im making a lot of threads lately. Please let me know if I'm breaking the rules, I don't want to be obnoxious. That said, I have been using the search function as of (very) recent, and slowly but surely i am learning :)

Anyways, I have a friend who doesn't use any substrate at all! She cleans the vivs alot tho, whenever she sees poo she cleans it. All the snakes
seem really healthy.

She has the same type of vivs that I use: Plastic Rubbermaid containers with holes punched in with an awl. I really like the way the lids have a locking thingy on them that secures them to the box.

My substrate is newspaper. I can't use aspen or coconut bark because it's too messy for my situation. Here's my question: Should I adopt her method?
I don't mind cleaning the enclosure every time Cornflakes poops, in fact it will give me an excuse to spend more time doing corn-related things! :crazy02:
 
I think having no substrate is a bit strange... Newspaper/paper towels is as basic as I go. And it works perfectly fine for me. All you need to do is replace it when anyone poops. I imagine she has to wash the entire box when any of her snakes poo.
 
wow no substrate...dont corns like to burrow, so without any they pry cant..right?...well maybe you should have your friend adopt your way so that there is some sort of substrate for the corns...i guess if no substrate works then it works...
 
I've had aspen before... like i said it's way too messy...Cornflakes never tried to burrow, he likes to climb instead, lol.
 
oh..i am new to corns so i dont know too much...i did not even know you could use newspaper lol...my furture corn will be on aspen...sort of off topic but what type of plastic tub thing do you use? is it cheaper to set up...easier to maintain?
 
My opinion:

Just because something is more convenient for the human and the corn tolerates it, does not make it healthier or a better option for the snake. If we are going to take in these animals we need to provide them with what they need to be the most comfortable.
 
Mine all really love burrowing, too. I would think it'd be way easier to hand-pick out a clump of aspen than to take everything out of the viv and wash it...

Hmm.. you guys have a valid point. Well, until my situation changes I'll just have to stick to newspaper. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I did like the look of aspen, but like I said, it's too messy when comes time to dispose of it. Although, I recently read a poll on substrate... I may be switching to aspen once I run out of newspaper.
 
I use newspaper for mine, i cant find aspen here :(
