Summer heat and cooling

Hello all my fellow snake fans,
This will be my first summer with my snakes. I live in Oregon and most of the housing up here doesn't have air conditioning b/c it never really gets that hot. Maybe a week or two in the 90's but that's it. So my question is this. Other than making sure my corn snake has an adequate water bowl and clean water is there any other good methods for making sure her terrarium doesn't get to hot? Obviously I don't want her to cook but should I turn off her UTH a few days after she has fed if the weather has gotten really hot and the place I'm living doesn't have ac? I've read all sorts of stuff on keeping the proper temps in my snake's tank. But most of that has to do with making sure the tank has enough heat. But what about if it's crazy hot and you live somewhere w/o Air Conditioning?

Can you buy a small portable AC and just use it if you have to? (I have one and I love it!!) Otherwise, put the viv in the coolest room, close to the floor, with a big water bowl.

If the UTH is running too hot, you can put a thermostat or rheostat on it. Probably should, anyway.

It's also possible to keep the snake at room temps, if that's in the low 80's. Anything above 85 F is hard on adults (though babies like it around that temp). 90 F or above is dangerous. It you have plenty of substrate and your evening/night temperatures are dropping in the lower 70s the viv probably won't get above 85. You should check it, of course, and adjust accordingly. Air temperatures of 90 outside for a short time aren't enough to bring the viv temperature up to 90 unless the viv is positioned so that it is directly affected by sunlight, which it shouldn't be.

I have several vivs currently not using any heat source most of the time. The temps are running 80-83 degrees with an occasional evening temp in the upper 70s. On cooler nights or on nights when somebody was just fed I turn on the UTHs again.

Good luck!

you can try a lamp dimmer for your uth. i use it all year and just increase and decrease power as needed. You can get them for like 10 dollars.

If you live somewhere crazy hot and can't climate control the room, you have a number of options.

If you have a tank with a screen top, you can point a fan in there. If you can get good air movement over the top of the water bowl, you can drop the temperature quite a bit if you're getting the water to evaporate. You can do the same with damp towels draped over the tank. Get the water evaporating out of the towels and your tank temp will plummet.

This won't work too well with tubs in a rack. If the AC broke in my house, I would probably just put ice cubes in the water bowls in all the tubs several times a day.

Ok I live in So OR and it does get crazy hot here for about 4-5 weeks (over 100) so I used oscillating fans it seemed to work fine no problems. I also turned off all forms of heat on snakes, except hatchlings.
