Taking my snakes to the vet, my mother finds it ridiculous.

Taxidermy

everything under the sun.
I talked to my mother, and asked her if my snakes would be taken to the vet if they ever got sick or injured and she just looked at me like I was insane. She said it would be a waste of money and would not be worth it. I don't know what to tell her to change her mind about this. None of my snakes are sick, I just brought up the subject and she didn't seem pleased with the idea of more vet bills.

The best way to go about it is to say these animals lives are no less meaningful to you then other pets, and that you cant stand watching them suffer if anything ever happens. I think money has a big role in it, I'm sure if you offered to pay or work for the bill it would lessen her apprehension about it. Remind her too that there's a low chance of anything happening, but in the rare case it does you just want to be responsible for your beloved pet. It doesnt matter if they have fur or scales, 4 feet or none, they are still living creatures that feel just as much as the next.

You are 16 years old here in California that is old enough to get a job. And that is what i suggest you do. They are your snakes and your responsibility. If they should need to go to the vet and your mom is not willing to help you will have to take responsibility and get a job so you can pay the vet bills. I know that seems a little harsh but it is part of the responsibility of caring for another living thing.

Thing is, my mother is to lazy to take me any where to apply for a job, I have applied at a few places but she refuses to take me anywhere and its still another two months until I get my liscenes. So until then I at least need her to take me places to apply, but she seems to find that to difficult e.e;;.

I'm sure you have a bike. Thats how i got my first job I road my bike around got applications and turned them in. All this just using my bike and a littel self motivation. You should be able to do the same unless the nearest place of business is 10 miles away but even then you could still do it if you wanted to. Then there are also things like getting a paper route or mowing lawns for money (I did this when I was 12 and made quite a bit).

There was just something on the news a few nights ago stating that there were not enough students to fill all of the summer openings in the Ft. Myers area, or in much of Florida. But it won't help for your mom to drive you to an interview, because if that is the only way you have to get there, it means she will have to drive you there every day to work. So you need to bike or use the bus, or mow lawns, or start up an eBay business, or something else that won't require mom to drive you. You may have to be creative to find something that works for you.

Once you have saved up a little extra money, you will have a fund for a vet if needed. Seems like a very responsible thing to do.

Good luck!

Suggestion...

Hi Tax :D

I've got a 16 year old daughter who has many pets, so I've got some experience with her negotiating with me. Now, granted - I'm quite a pet friendly mom, but I know what has worked with her.

First off, she takes the bus whenever I cannot take her. Being a single parent, this happens on occasion. Second, she pays for her pets, their housing and their food. <grin> Although I do pay for her snakes food on the condition that when the snake breeds, I get the eggs. She pays for Aspen by helping me clean mice cages. Her animals have fallen ill and needed vet visits. She gave me all the money she had and worked off the rest. The only time I've made an exception to this is when one of her cats ate wire and had an enormous vet bill. The little one had to be put to sleep and I just didn't hold my daughter to that bill. Makes sense?

In your case, this is what I would suggest. Get a job, save your money for at least the cost of the vet visit. This will show your mom that you are ready, should the need arise. If she is unwilling to take you then put your little buddy in your pocket (in a secure bag) and take the bus. California has the best bus system anywhere, I grew up in Orange County and used the buses to get to the beach every day in the summer.

I think that it would be worth your while to be as independent as possible - show your mom that you can do a lot on your own. That you only really need her when it's an emergency.

Good Luck Tax - I hope this helps!!!

OMG, my chin dropped when I read that you think your mum is 'too lazy to drive you to apply for jobs'. It is not your mothers obligation to drive you to apply for jobs, it's your job to get yourself there, so if that means dusting off your bike or dealing with bus schedules...do it. Take responsibility for your own desires. If you wanted to find a job, you'd go out and do it and not blame your mothers laziness for what is really your own.

You're right I shouldn't have blamed her, because one, she works all day and just likes to relax when she gets home. Two, she usually doesn't have the time off to take me. Also I do not have a bike, and there are no places around here looking for work at the time. The pet shelter was, and I actually applied there, but they never got back to me.

These days you almost have to call them back and follow up. Your application is sitting in a big stack of applications. If they still have a position to fill they will pull up your application when you call and take a look at it. Now your application is sitting at the top of the stack. That's how you get your "foot in the door". If they still don't do anything about it, call them again. The worst that will happen is they will tell you that the position has been filled. Tell them to let you know if any other opportunities come up.

You could ask around at school and see where people are working. Maybe they can hook you up with a job.

Perhaps I will try that :). I think my friend Adam still works at Brusters so maybe he could put in a good word for me, and maybe he could get me on the same schedule as him so that way he could pick me when he has to work. But I shouldnt get to into iit.

Hey at least ur asking, most people wouldn't bother bringing in thier snake.

The thing about reptile docs is it tend to be more exspensive cause it's a exotic animal. The hospital I work at, we charge $60 but a special reptile hospital I go to only charges $45 for just a exam.

It's always good to know where u could go just in case =)

I'm not actually working.. I'm trying to find a job thought, Checking all the better pet shops first, of course! :grin01: I've left college and I was going back. But I'm just going to get a job for steady money (Anything will do for now really) While I study, I'm starting to write a sitcom. So I'm watching a whole lot of 'em...
And about the vet stuff, I guess I'm lucky because I do have easy access to one, and my Mum is all about keeping Trav nice and healthy. She wasn't even very restrictive on how big his viv would be. As she doesn't like animals that are kept in small enclosures..
I'm sure this doesn't help at all.. But thought I'd mention that stuff lol.

My sister said something like that when Felix was sick! She said I spent more on vet bills then it would cost to replace it! How heartless can you get, sheash!

I definitely think it's your pet and your responsability. It's unlikely that between now and two months from now your snake will get sick but you never know :shrugs: . Oh and an exam at my vet costs $25 and at my old vet it was $30. Best of luck!

Have you thought about voluntering at the shelter? Although you wont get paid, it may be your best opportunity at getting your foot in the door. It also can lead to some good networking.
My first job was at a vet clinic when i was 15 as the groomer's assistant. I got hired because the main vet at the clinic knew me from the local shelter i voluntered at (she used to volunteer there also).

As an added bonus, you will probably find yourself being offered a wide assortment of pets and a great list of contacts in case of emergencies (like the name of a good herp vet who takes payments).

I have my corns, a few rosy boas, a leopard gecko, a blue tongue skink.....and.....2 PET rats that I love alot.....and if ANY of them get sick, to the vet they go.....no matter how much it would cost to replace them.....all of them...and I mean ALL....are not replaceable......
