Taking your snake outside

Hey all,

So I see a lot of you take your snakes outside to exercise or to get some nice outdoor pics.

I've been reluctant to take any of my snakes out for fear of them picking up ectoparasites.

Is picking up parasites unlikely? I'd love to take mine out but don't want to have to deal with mites if they pick that up.

Thanks for your input!

It would be extremely unlikely for a snake to pick up mites outside. Possibly, if you let the snake crawl in long grass it _might_ pick up a tick, but the tick is actually going to be more likely to go for you because you're warmer and more attractive. A couple things to watch out for are hawks or letting the snake get into some sort of hole or other area where it could become entrapped or out of your reach. Probably the safest way to begin taking your snake outside is to put it in a tree with low branches or on a railing of some type. Sitting on the ground in short grass and letting the snake crawl around (while watching for hawks) is safe, too. Also, if you set the snake down somewhere, such as a patio, be sure that the surface isn't hot to the touch. You don't want the snake to become overheated or to get burned.
