Tanks with a large collection??

Hello Everyone =)

So, I've been thinking on and off for the past couple months about either selling off some of the collection, and putting everyone in tanks, or keeping everyone and building a wall system.

Granted I'd love to keep everyone, but with 40+ snakes and a small bedroom to work with, I think I'm answering my own question over which to do.

I'm so bummed I don't get to see my snakes, I love watching them, and the money I spend, I agree in terms of thinking that I should be able to watch and enjoy them.

So my question is, what do other keepers with 40 or 50+ animals do when they want their collection on display? I'm willing to spend whatever money I have to, and even trade the rack systems out.

I have no clue where to start with building something like this, and the only thing I can think of as being easier is to just get the cheap plastic shelving units, and start slowly moving the racks out and swapping for a shelf/tank system. BUT I canno't fit 40 20L tanks, and a few 75 gallons for my boas and burms, it just is not going to happen.

So..what am I to do?

I've tried to part with a few members of my collection, but to no avail I either get flagged on craigslist for having "snakes" at all. Or get people far away that want animals shipped in the dead of winter.

=)
Thanks for listening to my ramble.

I thought the larger snakes need a room for themselves or they get aggressive. I've heard that some reptile parks and education centers will take some animals. I think you need a licence to ship reptiles and I think anyone would wait for the right time of the year for the sake of the animal's health. If you want to keep the entire collection, buy a house.

Design a shelf unit similar to a bookshelf with vivs the right measure for each individual snake, possibly at expected adult size? You can have either sliding doors or hinged. I am working on a design for one myself and I only have 7 snakes lol. I hate CL for rehoming snakes. Try the Ebay Classifieds.

Wow, that does sound like a daunting task! Also, if you're not in a permanent home, it might be difficult to build something custom for your wall. What if you move and then the wall rack doesn't work with your new space?

Here's a link to one of my favorite DIY display tank that I've seen someone make.

Perhaps you could make something like this, or multiples for your wall, and put some of your favorite snakes in them. You'll still have the benefited space of a rack, yet you'll be able to see the animals you love.

I hope all goes well.

Thanks, yeah.. I'll be moving within the next year or so.. I'm thinking about narrowing down slightly, and going with a few tanks on shelves! Thanks Jessica! I will look over it =)

An entire room? lol My baby boy is only 3 feet right now, he is my one eye'd rescue. And I cannot see him needing an entire room being full sized 10 or 15 years from now. Maybe a nice wall length viv, but not a whole room =) Although that would be cool!

Too many snakes :uhoh: Well if your going to move in about 2 years and don't have room..why don't you sell some? I'd hate to sell too but that gives you more money towards the other snakes you really want to keep.
I found this, http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108083
Maybe building a few of those would help.

Until you actually own your own place or whatever..I wouldn't keep so many!
Good luck tho.

What about something like this? You could easily put glass tanks on it and not worry about weight. And when it came time to move it could be easily unassembled. Granted having enough shelves for 40-50 snakes would take up alot of space.

this is another possibility.... maybe a bit cheaper:

I have seen that but didn't suggest it. She will end up spending a lot for that consider she has 40 snakes. I posted my link because it is easier to build something rather than buy it pre-built. She could easily find wood from family or friends and many other supplies. Plus she did say she wanted to atleast have her snakes on display...something she can see them in.

;)

Have you tried a rack yet? I thought I would HATE it. I mean, REALLY hate it. But I love it!! I can see them pretty well, though of course not as clearly as glass. But I can see them clearly. And it is _so_ much easier to deal with cleaning. And I can go down the line of bins and it is like a library of snakes. Which one do I want to take out now? Who is out? But- I have the big 66 quart bins, so I don't feel like they are lacking for space. Still, five racks, holding 25 adults, takes up a wall. But, _I_ wouldn't think you were crazy if you had two walls of 25 snakes! I think it would be cool!!

I thought the OP said that they were in a rack system now. I don't know what kind of racks they are...a picture would help. If they are a wood or melamine shelf type thing to hold the bins, they may be able to be modified. Describe what you have, or post a pic. I may have some ideas.

http://www.masondixonreptiles.com/ReptileRoom.html Here are pictures of our herp rooms. :) We use racks and cages...and some tanks.

Here you can see the large 66 quart racks Nanci is talking about. We loved hers so much we ordered our own. They are Animal Plastics..not on the usual orderforms, you have to ask to have them made. But they do allow more light and more visiblity than the traditional rack you can also see.

Or just go for stacked cages! These are also by Animal plastics and when devided are 2x2 and quite big enough for adult corns!

I love you guys!! Thanks for all of the links and ideas! I have a wood rack with 32q tubs right now for the BPS and corns. I LOVE Whippets setups. Wow!

Tara, I couldn't help but notice that one of your guys (or girls) was out crawling around on the floor. Out for exercise or an escapee?

This is what my wall of snakes looks like! Only now it's full and there are a LOT of feeding bins on top!

Mine are from Animal Plastics. It is the 66 quart AP Sterilite 1758(5)EP.
It is not shown on the website, but if you write, Allie will be happy to help you! It comes with heat and you buy the bins from Target.

Can you use them for hatchlings? I am looking for a rack system that I can use with my hatchlings without fear of them escaping.
