Temp gun or temp probes?

For those of you that have multiple snakes and have chosen to purchase an IR temp gun, do you also use regular temperature probes in all of the vivs and just double check the temperatures with the gun? Or do you only use the gun?

I have temp probes so I can walk through my livingroom twice a day and know, instantly, that all temps are acceptable. But a temp gun has a thousand uses, and I would hate to not have one available!

With a digital thermometer, on all the time, you'll know the minute a thermostat or UTH fails (if you are looking!) If you only spot-checked temps, who knows how long it would take to notice. And all it takes to make temps go whacky is a dislodged stat probe.

Or a mom that accidentally pulls the power out while vacuuming...

I have a 10-slot AP rack, and I have probes in 3 of the tubs (top, bottom, middle). The AP rack uses a continuous piece of Flexwatt, so the temps SHOULD be consistent within a few degrees from the top tub to the bottom. That said, I do have the IR temp gun to double-check all the tubs regularly. I do have back-up thermometers lying around, too, so if I'm ever uncomfortable for whatever reason, I can put in more probes to monitor things.

Probes are all that's required. However, as Nancy points out, there are a thousand uses for a temp gun.

With a temp gun I can check the temps on every inch of the enclosure as well!

Temp guns are awesome because you can instantly check as many different areas in the enclosure as you want.

I would recommend a heat source hooked up to a method of controlling the heat. Something like a lamp dimmer can work, but if you want something more reliable than that you should go for a professional level Herpostat. Check Spyder Robotics' website. A probe will come along with one of those.

If you don't have a probe but you do have a heat regulator source then the heat gun will be your best friend. Just point, shoot, adjust. You don't have the same piece of mind of being able to check a digital read out of what temperature your snake's enclosure is, but remember.. the probe is only reading one area. There could be a problem area that the probe might not reveal if you don't move it around a bit.

Here's the probe that my brother's gf just got and it's been working great for her.

I have a dimmer on a few of mine, and a thermostat on another, all with probes. I am planning on adding to my collection in the near future however, and we just trying to determine how best to go about it! Thanks for all of your advice :)

I will be purchasing temp probes for all enclosures, and perhaps asking for a gun for Christmas/Birthday :)
