Termites???

Crazy Critter Lady
Ok Termites have begun swarming near us and today I found a couple in my snakes Viv. I have her on Aspen. I like that she can tunnel in it so I would hate to take her off it. Any ideas what I can do to keep them away? We will be having the perimeter of the house sprayed. But will it be enough? Can they hurt my Rose?

Well that's a first for me. I've not heard of this happening before. Maybe try dumping the aspen and not using anything wood for now in her viv until after the spraying? Sorry I can't help more....hopefully someone else will come along and give you better ideas.

I don't think they'd set up housekeeping in the aspen. I'd be concerned about the house, though!

Do termites "like" newspaper"? (Sorry - they're not a problem in the UK so I don't know). If not and you're concerned about the aspen, you could take it out and replace it with newspaper. If you add a layer of crumpled newspaper pages as well, you'll give her something to burrow into that might not attract the termites.

I'm betting they are just there by accident. I had three on my table at a restaurant today. On the straw wrapper.

Thanks guys, we cleaned out her viv and we sprayed yesterday. Haven't seen anymore since. The guy that prayed told us they weren't termites! They are drone ants! The males that have wings until they mate. The stuff they sprayed with will keep them away too. Aparently they are seeing a lot more winged ants this year than usual. People are thinking they have termites but so far only about 1 in 4 calls are actually termites.

As to worrying about the house, very little in this house is wood. We live in a trailer. I'm not sure what everything is that has been used in here but its not much that is actual wood or 100% wood.

Thanks again everyone!

Well that's good they aren't termites. I'm glad it all worked out and that your trailer/snake viv is pest-free so far!

Just as a info only, Termites love newspaper and cardboard. A shed I had in Florida got some termites one year and they ate all the bottoms out of the carboard boxes as well as much of the newspaper they items were packed in. Nasty little creatures too..... The exterminator use a product call Termador on them. We ended up replacing the shed. They pretty much ate the back wall the rafters and all the boxes and newspaper they could. Luckily they didn't get to the house. We treated it anyway.

Glad to hear they were not Termites.
