Text while Driving? Then You Must Watch! - GRAPHIC!!

That was filmed a couple of miles from where I live...... It's a Welsh advert....
We don't mess around when we're trying to get a message across.....

Geez, that's one way to drive the point home. To be honest, I wish there were more advertisements like this about every preventable accident. It sure was graphic, but it beats that happening to someone in real life. Texting and driving is so obviously foolish, I was blown away to find out how many people do it. It's scary stuff, and as a driver you must keep constant focus on the road.

Scary? Not anywhere near enough.

I only wish they'd been far more graphic, then I wish they'd make every driver on the planet watch it. Twice. The more people who barf, the better - maybe then someone would pay attention.

I spent nearly five years on ambulances, at varying levels of emergency medical training. Lack of attention is bar none the most common cause of traffic accidents, especially the really nasty ones. I've spent way too many hours crouched in the crushed passenger compartment of a car, protecting yet another victim of someone not paying attention, while they cut the car apart around us to get the victim out.

There is absolutely NOTHING that is so important it can't wait until you stop. Nothing. Period. I talk on the cell phone pretty regularly when I drive, but use speed dial by feel to dial the number. If I don't have the number on speed dial, it doesn't get dialed while the vehicle is in motion. When I get text messaging capability in the next few days, I swear to everyone here I will never respond to or generate a text message while the vehicle I'm driving is in motion.

Too many people have the deluded belief that 1) It'll never happen to me (kinda like starting smoking nowadays, with everything we know); 2) I'm careful enough to be able to do this safely; 3) I'm a good enough driver to be able to keep out of trouble while I just send this short message; and other such lunacies. Nobody is that good. Period.

I've taught several kids to drive. The first thing I tell them when they get in the car, and the thing I make them repeat every time they get behind the wheel with me, is "Everyone who is on the road right now is there for the express purpose of killing me." I will never teach anyone to drive if there is an active cell phone in the car, except for the one on my belt, and it'll stay there during the lesson. My daughter already knows that if I ever hear of her texting while driving, she'll lose her cell phone for a year and her driving privileges for six months. I'll check the cell phone bill every month, so there's no way she can hide it. She knows it's not an empty threat.

This is one of the very, very few areas where I believe a federal mandate is needed. A federal law can't cover texting while driving, but the Feds can make it very unpleasant for any state to be without laws barring texting while driving.

On the rare occasion I get a text message while I'm driving, my GPS tells me I have a text message and reads it aloud.

Don't text in the car, but did watch.
What a message!
Reminds me of chaos theory and the butterfly effect.

I completely agree about the texting while driving thing... my niece was in an accident SHE caused by texting while driving. Fortunately she AND the other person involved were relatively unhurt. I DO hope that she's learned her HARD lesson, but she's in those teen years where she probably feels invincible.

I just wonder about other things, though... eating while driving, listening to REALLY, OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD music while driving, having heated arguments with passengers in the car while driving (boy do I have a story to tell about this one), make-up while driving... et al. There are a tremendous amount of IDIOT drivers on the road... and while I don't necessarily agree with the "express purpose of killing me" statement, I can see where it comes from.

I just wonder if that type of PSA would work over here in the U.S.???

I saw that on Jimmy Soos's facebook the other day. Horribly scary! Heck, I can barely text in my living room, let alone when I'm driving!

I can't watch the video on the computer I am presently using but a 16 year old girl was killed crossing a street at a crosswalk at 7 PM at night while it was still light out here 2 days ago. Rumor has it the young male driver was texting.

Exactly! I might be too cautious, but it has spared me an accident so far, so I'll stick with my driving style. Talking on a cell phone, changing a CD, turning to a passenger to talk, eating, drinking, etc.. All really stupid things to do. I drive very defensively, and never take my focus off of driving. I can hardly drive with anyone else, because most people drive aggressively, foolishly, or don't pay nearly enough attention. I don't need an accident to have a wake up call, I'd rather learn through common sense.

True story ... When I lived in Texas I was driving south on 360 on the west side of DFW airport. Both lanes were backed up ten cars deep. I could see what looked like a car drifting accross the center line at the front. Slowly most cars made it around. When I got my chance I couldn't help but look over to see if the person was maybe drunk etc. Shocked, what I saw was a girl maybe 20, applying eye makeup, talking on cell laying on her shoulder held by cheek, smoking a cigarette, sipping a latte, steering with her knee!

You've also described my driving style. I don't own a cell phone, I get passenger's annoyed with me because I don't hold conversations while I'm driving, I don't "rubberneck", CDs are changed at red lights or when I am a good distance from any other vehicle, and I really hate being a passenger when my husband is driving as he WILL be the cause of an accident eventually. I just pray that neither I nor my children are in the vehicle with him at the time.

I flipped my truck last week as a result of texting and driving. I flipped twice, totalled my truck, and got a concussion.

NEVER take your eyes off the road. Pull over to eat, or dine in. Pull over to text or text before you leave. Talk on the phone if you NEED to at long red lights...Pre-set your radio stations so that you don't have to fiddle with anything. Get a CD changer installed.

I could have died from texting and driving.

Two months ago my friend was hit by a man who had been texting and driving for TEN YEARS. It only takes one time...Sorry to say, my friend isn't with us anymore. All because of foolish driving.

I do admit I will talk on the cell phone when driving, but only if it's an incoming call and I just have to flip my phone open to answer it.
I have never sent a text nor do I expect to anytime in the future.
I know my daughters both are as scared of people driving and texting as I am and have seen the video. Fortunately they are pretty level headed when it comes to that kind of stuff.

Scary? Not anywhere near enough.

I agree. I wish they would have concentrated more on the OTHER people hurt by her stupid actions. Of course, too many people wouldn't care about that since they just really d on't care about others or are unable to empathize with anyone else's loss.

I actually have my phones set up to reject text messages. I'll talk on the phone, but it is hands free. Since that usually helps KEEP me awake and alert more than being bored while driving, it might actually be safer for me....lol.

I'm with you... when I'm on a long trip, nothing keeps me awake like having my brothers or father call just to check on how I'm doing. I do the same for them when they're driving long distances.
