The heartache of breeding candoia...

How can you look out for a snake that for a start you have no knowledge on whatsoever... You have seen a picture that shows less than 1 3rd of her body. I certainly couldn't make the descision to euthanise anything based on such a small potion of the truth.

Your right I should not have judged/ I am sorry

Robbie I said it because I ment it. I was looking out for the snake thats all.

Again David, just let it drop.. Don't post back or give response. Just let it drop.

You made the mistake now own up to it and keep your mouth shut. (i am not yelling at you, I am just giving you advice to let sleeping dogs lie.)

Elle,
it is heart breaking seeing an entire brood dead like this. I am sorry to see this.

Now for Mum.. try an Anole or other small lizard you can get your hands on. since this is their natural foods (small lizards) This might spark a feeding response from her. And if you are forced to get about a dozen cheap lizards to get her back to feeding. It may be worth it to eventually wean hear back to mice.

Again, I wish you the best of luck.

Elle in ten years after many many success breeding seasons you'll look back and use this story to educate others. I know this is a huge road block now, but its not permanent just crappy for now. Give your sweet lass a big hug and kiss she'll be in my thoughts:)

Taking into consideration the fact I had one snake die of a confirmed case of IBD almost 4 months ago, I think it will need to be at least 20 years down the line before I can even contemplate breeding... Unless I plan to keep every single baby I ever produce for it's entire lifetime.

Already ordered some anoles. I was planning on trying her with them regardless. I just hope she willingly takes something soon. But for now I can keep her alive via tube feeding blended mice and essential vitamins and minerals.

That's too bad Elle :(! It must be tough to see such beautifully developed babies pass away, and I hope the very best for the mother. I wish you the best, and hopefully the mother comes around for you.

I also won't add to any form of a debate after this, but I feel that it is best to console people when there down, rather than to bombard them with the woulda', shoulda', coulda's. Kicking people when they're down is not only rude, but it is especially incompassionate.

I don't know what to say then I understand with IBD and its ability to easily spread you wouldn't want to breed anytime soon to be sure the rest of your collection is healthy. I'm not educted enough to know much about the behvior of the disease in terms of how long it can remain dormant and undetected. I just hope this is the last time murphy pays you visit for awhile you've more than paid your dues:)

Are you gonna try live feeding on her? I wonder if you place a live anole with her for a few days if that would get her to take it. I would never condone this with Rats and mice but I have never heard of an anole chewing on a snake.

I am not sure what I am going to do. I will need to get a wee established colony up and running to at least keep the anoles alive and well gut loaded for her. If all she wants to eat is anoles then whatever. If that's meets her need to feed then so be it...

I will try her with the usual feeding methods and tricks in a few weeks once I have got some nutrients in her. Of course I will offer her the option of food before I tube feed her. But she is just too skinny to be turning her nose up at anything.

In regards to IBD, I can not take the risk of breeding anything that is currently in my collection due to the risk of having the virus passed on from mother to babies. UNLESS I keep every single specimen I produce.

It has only been around 4 months since Clementines diagnosis. If in another few years years all my snakes appear healthy and show absolutely no signs of IBD then I may consider breeding the carinata again. For my own personal gain. The fact they have tiny litters is beneficial. I would have no issues breeding them and keeping all the babies. They take up so little room.

I will probably try with them again, and if I have any success the next time around then I can pass that knowledge and experience on to someone else.

I am just so gutted to have lost them all. They looked like beautiful examples of the species.

David....What part don't you get!!!
I mean really!!
Don't you have friend that say...stop !! or give you a look, or your mother tone changes. Don't you see this??? You were ask to stop... here!, and now you came back. You don't understand when it a good time to leave a thread!!!

You "might" be "book smart" but you don't have a clue about how to deal with society (the people around you).

Give respect to Tula and stop posting on her thread.

Thanks

OMG Elle, I am sorry... :( I hope she recovers well.. You have been through so much that you don't deserve this year.. ((HUGS))

David, sometimes it is better to just bite your tongue.. Elle and most of the regular posters here know what they are doing.. I have had some snakes become pretty emaciated after laying eggs, I didn't give up on them and they are doing fine.

David- every shred of respect I may have had for you evaporated after reading this thread.

Elle- I am really sorry, I can't imagine what it would have been like to go through the heart-wrenching experience you had over the last few months...
You attempted something commendable, and I think you had more success than most with Candoia... they are very very hard to breed in captivity.

I hope she will regain her weight loss soon enough,

All the best dear,

Oren.

Thank you. I think she and the babies were so traumatised and stressed from the recent vet visit. I shouldn't have taken her but I was so worried. She was looking extremely thin (aside from the swollen belly) and quite lethargic. It had been just too long past her due date and I needed answers.

Mental note *DO NOT DISTURB GRAVID BOAS, even if you don't think they are gravid!!!*

Nobody euthanised your mother after she gave birth to you....
I'm sure you got that last post wrong, Elle...

There is a good joke there but ..now is not the time.

Tell me about it dude ;) Oh if only!

God I am Soooooo gonna get flamed for that.... LOL
But come on guys, it was a great feed line going begging, and after I read the entire thread ..... Well you can guess the rest...
(Sorry David, I don't want to kick you when you are down, an all that...)
No real offence intended ... No malice a fore thought... etc.

I'm really sorry to hear about this final blow, Elle.
You are really going through it ATM.
Don't give up with the snakes (who am I going to fight with if you bugger off), everything will turn around soon.
You know what your doing and the snake is probably with the best person to get it back on form again....
I won't send you
((((HUGS)))
as you'll probs be looking for the knife hidden in the hand.... j/k..... LOL

But my thoughts are with you....

Elle, I am truly sorry for this latest loss you have had to endure. My thoughts a prayers are with momma. I hope she turns around for you very quickly.

Thanks guys. I just keep hoping that something good will come round the corner soon. And that with this years horrific events I will hopefully experience a great year in 2010.

I just want my animals to be healthy and perfect. Thats what I strive for in keeping snakes. It's just no fun at the moment, and I would have liked to give up at ever hurdle. But you can't do that when you buy animals. You make a commitment as soon as that living creature is in your care and you see it through right to the bitten end.

We will all get through this, whatever the outcome may be. And all I can do is provide them with the best medical and practical care I can.
