Hi

I'm Dominic.

For Xmas I got my son a Sunkissed Stripe that is possible het amel/hypo/carm/lav (I think I got that right). He chose the morph and he loves the snake. Her name is Peach (son is a Mario fan). We got it from Scott at srcorns.com.

Since getting into cornsnakes we feel we made the right choice and wouldn't trade her for any other type of snake.

We are thinking about breeding her as a hobby but have a few concerns (ie. what do I do with all those snakes if someone doesn't want to buy them?; what if her poss het is too hard to figure out?) She is young so we have lots of time to think about it/ask the right questions.

We are definitely enjoying her.

Wow she is beautiful. It looks like she has a turtle face on her head. Perfect Mario snake. I haven't met Scott at SRCorns. just Steve. I have several of their snakes. This year I am planning to add a Honey Lemon and Amber Stripe.

Oh shoot! Steve! Such a nice guy. Answered so many of my noobie questions, then I go and mess up his name!

He hates being called Steve. He prefers to be addressed as Mr. Expensive Ugly Overpriced ERO.

You'll have to search the forum to understand why though.

Steve produces some lovely corns, many of us on here have some of those. Welcome to the club, both Roylance Corns and Cornsnakes.com.

Welcome and she IS pretty! Will you start a thread to post updates to as she grows?

As far as I know, the only way to test/figure out hets is to test breed the snake to another one with the genes you are checking for, and see what the results are.

I myself don't know of a snake morph with all of those genes yours MIGHT be het for. But if you get a butter stripe male, that would test the amel and caramel, (plus you'll get striped babies no matter what!) A hypo Butter stripe would be even better and only leave the lava gene to test. Lava stripes are a very pretty snake.

If you stick with test breeding any morph that has stripe or motley pattern, you'll always get something that at least is a stripe or motley and not a 'normal' corn, which might help you find homes for the babies. With 4 possible hets, I think it would be likely that she has at least one or more (and don't forget that she also has the genes that she is showing to have fun with, too)

Either way, you have a few years to decide! Perhaps you can set your son to researching corn snake genetics and then start shopping for the right male/s to test with, you have time to find the right one/s.

Hello and welcome! That is a gorgeous snake! But then anything from Steve is, LOL!

You or your son might enjoying using this gene calculator to find the best genetic future mate(s) for her. Corns and reptiles in general can be an awesome way to learn something about genetics for sure.

Thank you for all the kind welcomes!

Nancy,
Lots of great thoughts! Thank you! Especially about the stripes/motleys. I have a cousin that wants to give me his Butter Motley yearling male. That would test for a couple traits and motleys might be easier to sell.

I use the calculator often. It's very useful. But I still have a lot to learn about all these amazing morphs that you guys keep pumpin out!
