The Type of Aspen I use

tricksterpup

I has nuttin to Say.
Ok folks, I have posted a few times here and mentioned off and on that I use Horse bedding aspen.
I do not go to petco or petsmart and buy their expensive aspen. lol I actually go to a local co-op store, in my case its called Fleet Farm and buy my bags of Aspen for $5 a bag. This stuff is pretty clean and virtually dust free.

I love using this stuff for my larger snakes and corns. My smaller critters though will get placed on paper towel.

Here is the huge bag of it, over 43 pounds.

and here is a good look at the aspen itself.

If you use aspen, I suggest buying this stuff. Its Cheaper and comes in a larger bag. I may have to go out of my way, a 20 minute drive for it, but its worth it when I spend about $20 in aspen at one time.

DANG! I can't even find pine shavings for horses for under $7.50 a bag! I will have to ask if my feed store if they can get that. I travel about 25 miles one way to get there as they are the only place I can get my rodent food.

Ohhh, that looks like beautiful stuff, James! I love that type of cut to the chips.

We have a ton of horse farms around me, so somebody has to carry it. I'm getting low, so it's time to do some 'sploring. Thanks for the reminder!

Oh man am I jealous!! I get the big bags of aspen at shows for like $20, but $5 is way cheap man. Trouble is I don't have a farm within 45 minutes of me, but that stuff lokks great,

We also buy our Aspen from a farm store(ours just happens to be TSC). It has the opposite cut of that but is really cheap and I have also found that it has much lower amount of dust.

Thanks for the heads up, that's a great deal. We have fleet farms here, and my dad even works in the warehouse here...so I should have no problem getting my hands on it.

Aspen

Thats pretty good Jim.Try the aspen at Superior its the same size bag and it is even more shedded.Like the stuff Kathy Love uses. I thinks it cheaper too but dont know about with shipping

That looks like really nice stuff. I get a little nervous around any type of pine shaving. I have seen the effects that they can have on rodents. If I do have to use them, I do a 50/50 blend with carefresh and aspen.

Here is a link explaining what I mean, regarding the effects of pine and cedar on rodents.

I haven't had any ill effects with the aspen/carefresh mix on the snakes, but I don't like to push it. I do realize that many of you use these products, without incident, but I don't like to risk it.

Good Luck,

Wayne
