This is all Janine's fault

Save The Humans
I read Janine's thread about satin mice this morning and got thinking that maybe it would be fun to screw around with mouse genetics a little and see what I can do. I know nothing about mouse genes and how they interact with each other so this will all be new, but it might be fun.

Anyway I went to the local pet shop this afternoon to see what I could find. I a 50 gallon aquarium they had a couple hundred mice of all colors. I found two that I would call satin, one silver and one golden. Both were really pretty. I bought them and some others to mate with them. I guess if nothing interesting comes out of it they will become snake poo.

The silver satin is sooo beautiful! The one with the white butt spot is EXACTLY like the ones I used to breed.

Elle,
What do you know about them? Will the ones with white butt spots produce more with white butt spots?

I could only get two satins. The silver is a male and the golden one is female. I was going to breed them with other non-satins but of similar color. Or should I breed the two satins together if I want more satins?

I'm so confused!!!!

Taking pictures of mice is tough. They move around more than snakes.

I just noticed that both of my satins and that silver satin of yours are all pink eyed. It that typical?

Do you want to ship that silver satin to America?

Every single satin fawn I bred had the white butt spott, even when different fawns with no butt spot were introduced.

:shrugs: Not had this problem with any of mine.

But then again they do all live in the freezer.

But in seriousness, Cool looking furry fellas wade! Good luck.

Hey I got some of those banded butt mice in my last litter! lol I've kept all three back! lol

:uhoh: You're blaming me! Lovely satins. Ok, seeing as you've got 2 satins, and mice breed fast, you could breed both to a normal coated mouse, then breed the f1s together to get more satins!
I think the speed of generational turnover in rodents makes breeding for a different type a nice change while you're waiting for your multi-het snakes to grow up and prove themselves! Over the last couple of years I've gone from plain old PEW to a mixture of PEW, black/white patched, dark brown/white and pale brown/white. I could have got satins from a bigger, chain-type pet store, but finding satins in my local shop was just luck.
(I wonder if the satins will slip down the snakes' throats quicker?)

I'm still having problems in the feeder forum, Wade, so IOU 1 rep for the designer snake-food!

Thanks for the link Jen.

I'm going to be busy this morning but as soon as I get a chance I'm going to see if I can learn something about mouse genes.

J9 I have never really paid any attention to mice. My Swiss Websters and all PEW and breed like crazy and that was all I was interested in. This will be fun. I had never seen a satin the the pet shop before but yesterday out of the hundreds of mice they had two were satin.

Something different to think about anyway.

Sorry, Off topic

Sorry, this is off topic. But your mouse rack looks really very interesting, Wade. Can you post more pictures of it?

thanks.

This is one of my racks. They have wooden frames that the Rubbermaid tub fits into and slides in and out. The bucket on top has a valve in it like in your toilet tank so the bucket is always full of water. They are all on wheels so I can roll them around for cleaning and stuff.

This part of the forum still won't let me give love, so IOU another rep point. Wade, that is an awesome rack!

I repped you mate, that's a fantastic rack. Check out my message that went with the rep :grin01:

I wish you the best of luck with the mice, I'm sure you'll be producing premium mousicles in no time. :)

All the best

David
