I have this nagging question in my mind...and I hope nobody takes offense to this poll, I mean absolutely none by it...but I need to know for my own personal curiosity...
Which do you use and why?

English, British, UKer, Scottish, Irish.
I have seen people from Scotland call themselves Brits and people from Northampton call themselves English...I am just curious what is considered "proper" and why you all feel this way?

I class them all as UK, that is England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
I am "English" to be politacally correct, but i class myself as coming from the UK.

Hope this help

Wouldn't that depend on whether you're occupier or occupied? :noevil:

(Observe Derek, a debate has been set forth. ;) )

erm, well now i was born and have lived in england all my life, therefore i class myself as british, i come from britain, i never class myself as from the uk, as i aint from all the places, lol, just britain.
:D

if that make sense at all........

edit: ok i am officially daft! have just noticed ive stated i class myself as british and yet i voted the england one, i should have voted the britain one, lol, as england is in britain.
 :shrugs: :awcrap:

ha ha

England is part of an Island called Great Britain. Great Britain is the official name given to the the two kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the principality of Wales. It also includes the small adjacent islands except the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Sometimes people use the shorten name Britain instead of Great Britain.
The United Kingdom, on the other hand, consists of Great Britain (as I just described) and Northern Ireland.

Then there's the British Isles which is the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and about five thousand small islands.

Hope that helps...

Well, ALL of these are correct (if you come from England). I voted England, because that's where I live and came from, Scottish, Irish and Welsh people would have to vote Britain or United Kingdom, but if they had the option to choose their country (Scotland, Ireland, Wales) then I'm *guessing* they would choose those...

Tanya/CornFan has given the perfect geography lesson, I remember keeping all of that straight when I worked at National Geographic. Itssnowingcorns and others have included the political aspect. The best and only way to really know for sure is to ask the person involved. If you ever saw The Replacements, recall the scene where they refer to the Welshman as a Mick.

Of course you can just lump them all together and call them Limeys, then you could offend everyone at the same time.... :sidestep:

Ouch, ouch, I was just kidding.

Well thank you all for replying...I got the idea of it from Missy's post...but Cornfan left no trace of a doubt.

Thank you all for the geography lesson...I believe I understand now...
I appreciate your input.
I am just an uncultured yankee...LOL...but I am TRYING

Very nice addition...thanks... :noevil:

And actually this about sums up everyones examples and explanations.

Your the same as some of us uncultured Brit's (welsh scotitish, whatever) :wavey: .
But i am leaning slowley (the US is a lot bigger then the UK) lol.

i would say i am English. Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, are different countries, which are part of the United Kingdom. Therefore i am English, and i am proud to be. when we play a football ( soccer for you american guys ) match against would you support them both, because they are part of the United Kingdom? no, you would pick the country that you are from. not trying to sound nasty, but i feel quite strongly, and if there is one thing that us English could learn from the american's is to be more patriotic, instead of worrying about our culture offending people who have settled here. just noticed the date of this thread lol, came across it whilst searching for UK

I have a friend who calls himself a Limey LOL... never knew why... known him for.. hrm... 8 ish years... asked mum one day (My Nana was English, so mom knows some of these things) and she explained it to me. Not really sure why its bad to call someone that LOL... but I know it is!
I myself am "free-range"? LOL English / Irish / Scotish / French mix, born and raised in Canada, with an Egyptian religion LOL... and OH MY GOD the accent!! If I don't watch myself carefully and accidentally talked with my accent, no one would have a clue what I was saying LOL Know the movie Snatch? Yeah... I sound like Brad Pitt did in that hehe.

Sorry if someone already said this, but I didnt have time to read everything.

It really gets on my nerves when people think England and the UK are the same thing... I live in the UK, because I live in Northern Ireland (part of the UK) and I am certainly not english and would not like to be so!! (no offence people in england lol :) )

im from the republic of ireland so would not be part of the uk.i refer to each country individually as its easier.i have not voted in the poll as it does not include me lol :crazy02:

This thread is REALLY old... :crazy02:

But since I'm here... I say I'm English. Saying I'm British could also imply that I'm Welsh, or Scottish, etc, and I'm not. I was born in England and it's what I always put on forms.

It's kinda like saying "I'm European." It's true, but most people would say "I'm French" or "I'm Spanish." I think of Britain/England the same way. :)

I am from Scotland and live in Scotland. I consider myself Scottish and also refer to myself as such on forms etc.

However my passport states I am British and from the United Kingdom. This winds me up so much. I NEVER refer to myself as British.
