to buy or not to buy...

measley

Smile, you are alive!!
Hi all :) I need some advice on a not so serious topic.

My local pet shop has had an adult corn (I'm terrible with morphs but I think it may be a ghost but don't quote me on that) for awhile. Everytime I go in there I look at this snake. It's in a tiny cage but the water is always clean and the carefresh is usually clean. I keep debating on whether or not to go rescue this guy/gal.

My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy for going from one snake to 3 in about 5 months. (I got melman and then rescued a BP and absolutely had to have a ghost corn from PJC :)) so maybe I should just enjoy the ones I have...

But this one is so pretty and docile... and I talked to the manager who said he would sell it to me for $50...

But I know there's also the argument that they will just replace it with another snake as soon as I get this one...

What do you all think? To buy or not to buy? :)

I wouldn't look at it as rescuing--if you want the snake and you have the space and the resources to take care of it, then I'd say go for it!

I'd say handle it and see if you like it! It sounds like the petshop is taking adequate care of it. Of course they are going to fill that space with another snake. It would be difficult for the shop to keep snakes in the fine conditions we keep them in at home, especially adults, but if the cage is clean and the water is fresh and the snake doesn't have mites or retained sheds and isn't skinny- then they are doing all right by it. It's probably someone's relinquished pet. I wouldn't buy it in terms of rescuing it, but if you like it, then get it!

Stop going to your local pet shop.
They seem to make their most sale this way.
You haven't say that this snake "fits" into you "plan" so it seem like a impulse buy.
Do you have the money for the added cost feed, housing, etc etc?
Do a pro and con list and go from there.

Thanks for the replies everyone!! I guess rescuing is the wrong word... I really do want this snake and I've handled it a few times and it is very docile. The manager said that they've had it there for a long time. Seems someone bought it but decided it was too big so returned it to the store...

I think I do need to quit going to petshops... The first time I saw it, I needed a quick heating pad for my first corn and since then, I've gone back to see it and it always looks so bored in his little cage with no hides...

It wouldn't be an impulse buy... You're right, I wasn't planning on 4 snakes, but I have been debating on whether or not to buy this snake for about 2 months now and I would probably not buy it right away...

I do have the money for the housing and food, etc...

I just need to think about having 4 snakes... :p There aren't too many cons though!

If anyone else has thoughts, I'd be happy to hear them!!

Thanks again all!!

Thanks for the advice Nanci!

I remember when I had that few snakes. Number 20 is arriving next week! But I don't want to be overwhelmed by the numbers. It's not the space, or the money. It's just, when it comes to feeding day, is ten snakes a burden, or not? What about 15? Sometimes ten is nothing. Sometimes, when I get home late, and it's their day, and I'm tired, but I don't want to skip or wait a day, then it's a little work. But how do people with 50 feel? 100? I want mine to all be special pets. The most recent snake I bought doesn't have any place at all in my projects- he's just gorgeous. I couldn't resist him. I guess, if you feel a connection with this snake, and it won't be a burden, then go for it! You're sucked in now anyway.

You're sucked in now anyway.

haha- You've got that right!! I love these critters! I've made a secret deal with myself that I will not get more than 5 until I've hit the year mark of keeping snakes.

I've decided that I will get this snake (provided it's still at the store) under one condition...

I applied for a scholarship sponsored by the Okinawan (island in Japan that I'm from) government that will allow me to go to university for one year in Okinawa. It is completely paid for by the Okinawan gov (including tuition, room and board and even airfare to and from the island - their thoughts is that maybe children of Okinawan descent will come back and contribute to the island). I came in 3rd when I applied a couple of years ago and my grades are higher now and I think not as many people applied so there is a good possibility I will be able to go.

(Don't Worry, people... :) I've already thought about my snakies: My boyfriend will take the 2 corns (he's helped me with them since I got them so he knows how to care for them) and my BP will go to a good friend (and current roommate) of mine that keeps BP's and has a rat colony so she can feed him and take care of him until I get back).

So the point of telling you about this is that I've decided that IF I get this scholarship, obviously I won't go buying more snakes before I go but if I don't get the scholarship, I will go out and grab that snake up (if it's still at the store).

Sound good?? :)

Thanks for your replies, all!

How soon before you find out if you get the scholorship or not? I don't know if I'd be able to wait to buy the snake.

Good luck to you in both arena's!

Gene is an extreme example of metastatic snake disease...Worst case scenario, in fact.

LOL, they have a name for it?
I'm just loving this addiction/hobby and the people
I've met associated with it. My snakes are my sanity!

Thank you!! I should find out by Friday so I'm tiptoeing around right now waiting to get the email or call from them!

I almost went and bought the snake last night, especially because we were going grocery shopping right down the street and my boyfriend asked if I wanted to stop at the pet store... I had to tell him absolutely not so that I wouldn't buy it until I hear about the scholarship!

I just hope that if I don't get the scholarship, the snake will still be there... but with my luck, I won't get the scholarship and the snake will be gone... I would be very very sad... (but I'm knocking on wood now!!)

I know the feeling very well! I only have one snake right now in my care (as my corn is still on the loose), but I want soooo many more! My bp refused food last night, and I can't tell you how much it made me miss my little corn. They are so rewarding and easy to keep, if I were in Canada I'd have many, many more!

2006: 1 cornsnake
2007: Added 5 more (no corns-- all unique species)
2008: Doubled my snake number (to 12) in three weeks time

:eek1:

I'm in trouble.

Also, for $50 for a snake I like, I'd buy it. There's an amel at the shop I go to that is quite nice looking. I wants it, but it's like $125! I could get so much at a herp show for $125!

The only snake I want right now is $750...And I hate to say, I've been t hinking about it for weeks. Months.

Measley, I never thought I would say such a thing...but...good luck on NOT getting the scholarship!!!!

And Nanci, what snakey do you want that's $750?

I thought I was all done myself, except for keepers. But then Festivus had his accident. He's due to shed, will be off meds this week, but hasn't eaten. He is not out of the woods yet.
But now I have my eye on one of Rich's amber bloods. I can't afford it right away, what with Festy's vet bills that are rapidly stacking up, and the holidays right around the corner.....but....one of those in either sex will ensure my project goes on, even if Festivus doesn't make it. And they are honey-colored perfection....

I'm checking Serpenco every day to make sure he still has a few for sale....:)

Lol I'm so with the people here. I actually got my first ball python, not my first snake but my first ball python and first snake in a while, at the beginning of this year and now I'm up to 16! With 3 hoggies (2 westerns, 1 tri :D) coming soon lol. I'm trying not to overextend myself and I always make sure that all my animals are extremely well taken care of but there's just so many cool animals out there! I'm at the point now where I've got most of the morphs that I want for my BP projects and 90% of the corns that I want for my corn projects so now it's "hurry up and wait" time for them to get bigger so we can start breeding in a year or two :D.

So to the OP go with what makes you happy, and good luck with whatever you may choose!
