Hi, I am pretty much a novice in this whole snake thing. The closest thing I've had to raising a snake was raising a frog a couple years ago. I know, totally different. I'm planning on buying a corn this friday, and have a few questions.

1. Do I use a heat mat, heat lamp, or BOTH?

2. Do I leave these heating devices on ALL day and ALL night?

3. Do I NEED thermostat or is a thermometer just fine?

4. Is it okay to feed a baby corn one pinky mouse a week?

5. Does aspen substrate cause mites? (the packaged zoo med kind)

6. IS tap water okay for snake to drink and soak in?

7. How long do I have to wait until I can handle my snake after buying it?

Ohh, welcome to the corn addiction!

alright, in order:
1. You just need a heat mat.

2. Leave the heat mat on 24/7

3. You NEED the thermostat- that controls the temperature, because without it, the heat mat or even the light will hit temps that will burn/kill your corn. A thermometer doesn't control the temps, it just reads them. So you'll need a digital thermometer too, to ensure that the thermostat is keeping temps right.

4. Yes it is just fine to feed a baby that much, that's how I feed my babies. You'd move them up in prey size when you no longer see a lump in the belly of the snake.

5. Aspen doesn't cause mites, but it can carry it if the petstore has mites. Sometimes there are wood mites in the aspen, but those shouldn't affect your snake.

6. Yes, tap water is fine.

7. Usually you'd let the snake settle in about a week and then try to feed it. Once you have the snake eating, wait 48 hours before handling. I personally give new snakes 5 days to settle in, feed, then I can handle after the snake has been with me for a week.

I've never had a problem preventing mites... as long as you quarantine any new snakes you should be okay.

My thoughts:

1. Do I use a heat mat, heat lamp, or BOTH?
One or the other. Most people choose a heat mat but they must be regulated with a thermostat otherwise they get way too hot for a Corn. You need the floor surface in the mid-80s on the warm side of the tank, which will feel barely warm to you - you'll be surprised how cool Corns need it.

If you go for a heat lamp insted, that will still need a thermostat and you need to buy the right thermostat for whichever you choose. Many thermostats are designed only to be used with a mat and won't work properly with a lamp. Ideally you need to run the setup without the snake for a few days, to tweak the temperature and make sure it's right.

2. Do I leave these heating devices on ALL day and ALL night?
Yes. As you'll be controlling the heat source with a thermostat, this will automatically turn it on/off in order to maintain a constant temperature. You don't need a difference between day and night.

3. Do I NEED thermostat or is a thermometer just fine?
You need both as they're different bits of equipment. The thermostat controls your heat source and the thermometer measures the temperature to make sure it's OK. Thermostats behave slightly differently depending on the make/model of your heat source so you need the thermometer to check it. You need a digital or infra-red thermometer as the plastic dial or cardboard strip types can be 20 degrees wrong either way - enough to kill a Corn. The critical temperature is where the Corn will be able to get in contact with the hottest surface. With a mat, this will be the floor surface immediately above the mat. Don't bother measuring air temperatures in the tank, as the Corn won't be up there.

4. Is it okay to feed a baby corn one pinky mouse a week?
It's more usual to feed a pinky once every 4-5 days as a hatchling. As they grow and the food size increases, you feed them less often. My adults eat one large mouse every 2-3 weeks.

5. Does aspen substrate cause mites? (the packaged zoo med kind)
No. They would very soon lose customers if their substrate carried mites. Reptile mites are caught from other reptiles but they can be transferred by people, equipment etc.

6. IS tap water okay for snake to drink and soak in?
Yes.

7. How long do I have to wait until I can handle my snake after buying it?
We usually recommend leaving it completely alone without handling or feeding for a full week, apart from water changes or spot cleaning. This gives it a chance to get used to the sights and smells of its new home.

Hope that helps. Welcome to the most addictive hobby in the world!

Here's my 2 cents.... I basically agree with everything the previous posters have suggested. We all differ a little in whats "best" for us, so I figure I'll through out the way I do things.

1. Do I use a heat mat, heat lamp, or BOTH?

I agree, you don't NEED a lamp. Snakes don't require UVB rays to synthesize Vit D3 like some other reptiles. Since snakes eat mammals, they obtain this via diet. I run all mine on heat tape, similar to a mat.

2. Do I leave these heating devices on ALL day and ALL night?

Depends. I actually cycle mine. If your ambient temps are warm enough, you can set your thermostat to a timer to just shut off at night. You want to keep temps at least in mid 70's+ though. If ambient temps don't stay that high you can get a night drop thermostat, but this really isn't "required". As previous posters said, you can leave temp constant if its easier for you.

6. IS tap water okay for snake to drink and soak in?

Also would say it "depends" on how clean your tap water is. Its probably fine, I mean think about the water available to some snakes in the wild. However, if it has to be treated pretty heavily, chlorine added, fluorine, heavy metals, etc you might want to consider adding a product to declorinate it, or simply let it sit out uncovered for 24+ hours.

Everyone else gave GREAT advice, but like I said earlier, some of us do things a "little" different. Let me know if you ever have any questions!

Thanks guys! Also, is this a good starter kit? It's 100 bucks, so Is it worth the money?

This kit includes:
20 gallon (long) terrarium 30"x 12"x 12" (76x30x30cm) with sliding screen top.
ReptiTherm® Under Tank Heater
Mini Deep Dome Lamp Fixture
Daylight Blue Reptile Heat Bulb
Aspen Snake bedding (8 qt.)
Analog Reptile Thermometer
Repti Rock Water dish (med)
Plastic Bush Plant (med)
Habba Hut (med)
Guide to Reptile Care Booklet
ReptiSafe® Water Conditioner (2 oz)

That starter kit is OK. You'll still need to pick up a few supplies like a digital thermometer and a thermostat. Also, I wouldn't trust anything in the reptile care book that it comes with, you'll want to get either Kathy or Don's book on corn snake care.

It would probably be cheaper to buy everything separate since that kit comes with a lamp that you don't need and a thermometer that doesn't work and you will still need a thermostat and another hide since the kit only has one. It's also cheaper and you get more when you buy aspen for small pets rather then the reptile aspen that the kit comes with, the only difference is the reptile aspen is cut smaller.

Tap water is OK? I read that it wasn't. I've only been giving Loki filtered/bottled water.
Generally speaking if it's safe for human consumption then it's fine for snakes.

Some folks are worried about the added chemicals like chlorine, but if you put some in a bowl and leave it out overnight before giving it to the snake, the chlorine dissipates.

Mine have had chlorinated water straight from the tap since hatchlings and they're all fine.

^ Where I live we can't use that method for water as it contains both chlorine and chloromine(sp?). Though the chlorine mostly dissipates, the chloromine will not. It also contains other misc garbage that I wouldn't drink unfiltered if at all, don't use for my fish unless treated/filtered, and wouldn't risk giving to my snake.

@ OP -Best bet is to research your water, or if you have fish (or know someone who does) they might be able to tell you if they use the water as is, or if they have to treat/use another source.

Let me pick this apart..

This kit includes:
20 gallon (long) terrarium 30"x 12"x 12" (76x30x30cm) with sliding screen top. Good size, should last for a while.
ReptiTherm® Under Tank Heater OK
Mini Deep Dome Lamp Fixture Light inside the tank is not recommended. This or any other can be used for a light outside the tank.
Daylight Blue Reptile Heat Bulb Not needed with heater, regular bulb is ok for lighting, prevent snake touching hot bulb.
Aspen Snake bedding (8 qt.) OK
Analog Reptile Thermometer OK, use in cool end. Add a digital thermometer with a probe to monitor temp right above the heater.
Repti Rock Water dish (med) OK
Plastic Bush Plant (med) OK, but add more cover, baby snakes don't like open space.
Habba Hut (med) OK, but add a 1-2 more hides.
Guide to Reptile Care Booklet Probably little specific information. Corn-specific book is better.
ReptiSafe® Water Conditioner (2 oz) Probably not needed. Use same water you drink (or better), replace every 2-3 days.

In addition, add a climbing branch, and a thermostat or a rheostat to control the heater.

WELP, today is the day! Gonna leave in a few to pick this little guy (or girl) up. (do they even tell you the gender anyway?)

So, some of the stuff in that kit is useless, so i'll just pass on it and buy the stuff individually.

Again, thanks so much to all of you for the tips. I will be sure to post a pic!
