Snakes in designer genes
Last night was a great night for snake feeding! I feel like most of my fussy feeders are taking steps forward every time they're offered food. I'm now not force feeding *any* babies, and the smaller ones have gone from looking delicate and pathetic to looking like well muscled, happy little snakes :)

Three of my babies who have only ever eaten live multimammates took defrost multis last night. Still somewhat the wrong species, but as I really detest live feeding, it's a step forward .. at least it means I can just defrost food for them on feeding night, rather than having to root through cages looking for new babies when they're due fed.

I also did some anole scenting for the first time in a while (all my ex-anole scented are now eating unscented). Both of the babies I tried it with are younger than the rest of them - one I bred, another we are just looking after for a friend until we get her feeding properly. Both have eaten defrost, but then decided against it, and refused for weeks on end with all the normal tricks. And both devoured their anole scented pinkies without a problem - god bless you Mr Anole who lives in my freezer, you're a livesaver many times over!

I'm glad to hear your babies are starting to eat for you. It's so scary when a small snake goes on a hunger strike! Even one refused meal causes me to worry too much. Here's hoping these new feeders have had their first meals of many many more!

Congrats! That is such a good feeling to watch them eat!

Definitely .. the first time you see a previously frail looking baby reach forward and strike at their meal. It's even more of a transformation then when they shed.

Heh, yeah. You think I'd be more nonchalant about missed feeds since I have royals and hognoses who will occasionally just refuse something for no apparent reason, but while a 100g hognose refusing or a 1000g royal refusing isn't a big deal, a tiny 5g corn snake refusing even once just puts me in a worry. Too much stress!
