Upper Keys Bloodreds

These are F2's from a breeding project started by a Upper Keys X Butter Bloodred.
I got a trio of F1's from my friends Rob & Louise in 2007.

Only one of the females made it to breeding maturity this year and here are my keepers:

Unfortunatly, no Butter Upper Keys Bloodreds or Butters for that matter, were produce from the 14 egg clutch, but with both females breeding next year, I'm hoping for a better shot..

Keeping the Keys influence

Since the Keys isn't a simple recessive, how do you keep (or recover) the "keys look" when outcrossing them?

For example, if I wanted to produce Lavender Keys, and I bred a Lavender to a Keys, and then bred those offspring back to each other, would some of those look more Keys-like than others?

Keys animals have a distinct look about them, and that look tends to be passed onto what ever it is outcrossed into.. f1's and F2's , and from there I would have no idea if the look continues..

Tim is right, the Upper Keys "Look" is usually passed on and noticable even in the F1's, so if you were to breed a Lavender Corn X Upper Keys Corn you would get some normal (wild type) colored Corns with the Upper Keys "look" het Lavender.

Here is a pic. of the F1 adults form the original breeding of a Butter Bloodred X Upper Keys that produced my 3 keepers.

You can definatly see the Upper Keys infuence.

I was assuming outcrossing Keys would be similar to outcrossing Miami-phase (or Okeetee-phase) Corns and you would get something in between a normal or at least a gradient of those.

Walter, could the appearance of the F1's you posted be due to one of the parents being Caramel and Bloodred? Even though both Caramel and Bloodred are often treated as simple recessives, in my own experience, the hets have a unique look to them. I have several double het Caramel-Lavenders that look nothing like a typical "normal". I'll try to post a pic of some later if I get time.

Of course. Usually anything bred into the Caramel line will result in lighter/yellowish colored F1 offspring, which would somewhat be the case in the coloration of my F1's.

The same with the Bloodred trait here, however the Upper Keys already have a unique "look" to them and is close to the same as the Bloodred, less latteral pattern and less belly markings.

I've always thought about how much the Bloodred & Upper Keys kinda resemble each other in pattern.
