UTH temp question

Hey guys. I'm currently getting my viv setup and have a question.
My uth arrived today and I placed it under the aquarium and also used the included feet. My acurite thermometer probe is placed directly on the bottom of the glass above the uth. Prior to me hooking up the uth, it had stayed in the 77 degree area, but within 20 mins of me turning it on, it has jumped up to 111.

I have a thermostat ordered (don't worry I don't have the snake yet) but I was just wondering if it was normal for it to get that hot without a thermostat regulating it.
I guess I just wanted to make sure that neither the utv nor the thermometer was defective. Also, I have approx 2" of aspen as the substrate, should I lay down a layer of newspaper 1st, and am I right for sticking the probe directly to the bottom glass?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Also I should clarify: when I say the probe is stuck to the bottom glass, I mean on the inside of the viv :)

It is normal for them to get that hot without being regulated, that's why everyone stresses how important it is to have a thermostat! Once you get it on there though you should be just fine. I have my probe stuck right on the plastic (glass for you). You want to measure it there because that is where your little buddy will be burrowing down to. I wouldn't mess with the newspaper since the snake will go under it anyway.
:)

First off, UTHs can run up to 120 degrees! You have to have a rheostat of some kind to control the temperature of that UTH. You also have to have it raised up at least 1/4 inch for air circulation to keep the UTH from overheating. The UTHs can and will destroy your furnature and can kill your snake.

A snake can and will go under any bedding or flooring you choose to put their home. Some like to bury, while others like to be on top of it. So using paper towels or newspaper is just fine IF your heating source is controlled.

And it is good to have a thermometer attached inside, on top of the UTH.
