Hey, its not a big deal, and I know he won't die or anything, but my new corn's heatmat got the glaqss super hot so I unplugged it until I can go get the Rheostat tommorow. Its on sale! :D lol. Do any of your heatmats ever got too hot or do I have a crappy one?
 
Yeah mine were really hot, tested them out before the little ones arrived. PetCo did have the rheostat on sale, that was because it was on closeout, they didn't have any and since it was on closeout (translation: no longer going to carry, but might get some) I then decided to just get a lamp dimmer, they are like $13 at Home Depot and about $8 at Ikea. Works great!
 
what sort of wattage you talking about here?
My 3ft glass tank is heated partly by a 10" square 7watt pad and a 40watt blue heat lamp..
the glass over the pad is quite warm to the touch but not so hot as to burn... of course once theres an inch of substrate over the glass you get a pleasant warm substrate :)
 
hot uth

applied adhesive uth to tank. used a temp gun to check glass and it was 150 F after running most of day. Temp on top of 1.5-2 inches of Repti-Bark was 87 F however. Glad my snake doesn't burrow. Next time won't use adhesive to attach to tank. Also using a thermostat now to cycle off/on to prevent extremes and maintain closer ideal.
 
FYI...

In my experience, the ZooMed UTH get VERY HOT. The only animals I would use these with was Leopard Geckos. When I do use aquariums to house corns, I only use the UltraTherm (also sold under theT-Rex name). These work great and don't get overly hot.

Yeah, the rheostat is sold for like 7$ since its on sale and I really need it. It was a zoomed whatever you said and my snake does borrow so I don't want him to crisp. Since he is such a burrower (real word?) i will set the uth so that the glass is 85-86 degrees, not the substrate. Thanx for the tips!

I've found that your basic WalMart/KMart heating pad, set on low, with a layer of terrycloth towel, one or 2 folds depending upon thickness, between the pad and glass, works just fine.
 
i would still say that the wattage is way too high for the application at hand.... as i said in my earlier post, my uth produces just seven watts// insufficient to heat the tank but enough to warm the substrate a little.

:) Rheostats/ thermostats are a good thing.:) do not attach uth's to the tank unless a thermo regulation device will also be used.
All Uth's run hot "out of the box" in my experience, its a given.

Elevating ones tank over a heat source will also lower the heat output actually reaching the tank.

In my opinion, it is a big deal, i.e. it is potentially injurious and potentially Lethal to your captive. Nothing like 50-60-70 degrees fahrenheit ( 10-21 degrees celcius) too hot to ruin a Corn Snakes day.
 
One thing you must remeber is that I live in CA and it was about 75 the other day when I had to unplug it (the glass read 99.7) he was also on the cool side. His tank is fine now and the glass is about 89 but I discover that he only burrows on the cold side. the substrate is about 83 where he usually lays so he'll be great! Also, if he does burrow, he usually doesn't go all the way to the glass. Usually I find him about a quarter of an inch or so above the glass. Their natural habitat can vary slightly neways and now he can choose his temp so both him, and I are happy :)

while we are on the subject...

I'm having trouble heating my leos cage to the right temp. I have a 8 watt UTH and it only get to about 85-87, any way to kick it up to 90? Would a rheostat work? I dont have one and i just plugged the UTH in and it got to about 87.
 
How much substrate do you use in your Leo's cage? If you have too much substrate, the heat will have trouble reaching the top (especially if you use porous substrate like wood or carefresh). Just use less substrate, and it should kick the temp up a bit.

I use Calci-sand and I guess it conducts well or something, but if I don't use a rheostat inline I can hit the 100s easy. Babies I keep on tissue, so it's pretty much directly on top of the UTH, so it can hit high temps pretty easy (dangerously high).

I use those sealed flex-watt type UTHs if you're wondering, like the Cobra Heat mats from T-rex, or the Ultratherm heat mats.

Are under the tank heaters recommended over heat lamps?

I was just curious if under the tank heaters are better to use than heating lamps? I am currently using one heat lamp with a 100 watt bulb on one end of my 20 gallon - long cage.
 
I don't know if any one method is "better". There are pros and cons for each. An unregulated UTH or a lamp will have a larger 24 hour temperature variance than let say something controled with a thermostat. The biggest draw back I see with either is that they can only raise the interior temperature on the enclosure + 5-10 degrees above the room's temp. That can present a problem depending on the season and locale.

It really is a matter of personal preference. I'd suggest trying several methosds and see what works best for you. Regardless of the heating method, I would recommend investing in some form of temp regulator.
 
Where could I find something like that, and what should I look for in one? I have never owned one of those before. I own two iguanas as well, and they have always done extremely well with the heat lamps (and UV, of course), without using a temperature regulator, but it never hurts to try! Could you tell me some about it? CAV, you have been SUCH a help to me, thank you!

I'm finishing Grad school, so I know how tight $$ can be. If you want to go cheap, you can get a rheostat at Home Depot for under $10. They aren't as carefree as a thermostat, but still get the job done. This should get you started down that path:

I am checking out those links now. I actually have done my share of ordering from BigAppleHerp in the last few years! hah I am glad to know that there are other people using the site too.

I have yet to buy another enclosure. I bought my first tank from Twin Oaks, a company from Tennessee. I love the cage, but the company does not ship out their products. You can only find them at Herp/Exotic animal shows, which is where I bought the first one. I am going to try and get one as soon as possible. It does seem like my two snakes are doing fine, but I know I should not get a tank based on an assumption. I am definitely going to get one though, don't worry :D I do think I'll end up getting a second female at the next show, which comes in August, as I would like to eventually breed in the future.

Where do you go for Graduate school, and what are you going for? I am a double major at North Carolina State University. I just finished my freshman year there as a Biology/Zoology major with a minor in genetics. I am also an undergrad assistant to a graduate student who is doing research on the diving physiology of water snakes (she is the one who really made me want to buy corn snakes)...

Do you think either of these would be fine? (You were very correct in the assumption that money isn't flowing for me! haha But, I do want to make sure I am getting something worth the money that will do the job correctly!)
