UVA Lighting???

I just got my new snow corn!!

I have her in a 10 gallon aquarium with fish tank lid. I screwed in a 60 watt UVA bulb in one side and nothing in the other side. I read somewhere that Snows can't handle UVA lighting or don't like it. Should I switch out the blue bulb with my red bulb (also 60 watt).

I KNOW I should have a few UTH's but they are just soooo expensive...I'm trying to save enough money, but until then I will have to use basking lights.

So, which one. Blue UVA or Red Bulb??

Also, does UVA lighting have any ill effects on Snows?

i would just use the infrared bulb. the red one. not sure if they have any ill effects on snows IN PARTICULAR, but i can't really imagine any snake liking having a light on all day.

I don't know anything about lights...I have never used one for my corns. If you continue to use the light, it should be covered so the snake does not burn itself. Also, only 1 UTH is needed unless your house is freezing. Mine was about $20, thermostat $25 and a $10 thermometer...it's not too expensive.

The UTHs at our petstore are like 40 bucks...Its crazy. And I will need two since I have two snakes, two tanks.

That would work for my 10 gallon tank if I could order off line. No credit card. They may have a cheaper on at a more local pet store, I will have to see. I am FOR SURE getting one before winter.

You're not going to get much of a thermal gradient using a light bulb to heat a ten gallon tank.
Albino animals, such as your Corn Snake, are sensitive to bright light - they do not like it.

So...I should get a UTH? And stop using the bulb all together?

I've noticed...but she has to have heat somehow

Well yeah, that would provide a thermal gradient and relieve the snake from the stress of the light.
Is that light on 24/7?
Because if so, I imagine it's rather stressful for the snake.

For somebody who does use a light (40 watt red night bulb), i see no problem with the RED bulb. Of Course you have to cover the light so the snake cannot burn itself. I understand UTH are alot easier to hold temps and Tank Temps dont fluctuate but i havent had a problem with my bulb yet. I use a temp gun and i am consistently in the 83-86 degree range on the hot side and 75-79 on the cold. When you get the money a UTH may be your choice, but until then, i dont think a Red Bulb would kill you IMO.

Goodluck

No, they are in my room so its only on during the day time. I leave the snows on for about 5 hours because thats the only way she gets heat after eating. For my classic corn, the light stays on pretty much all day, but stays off at night. At the time I only have one red bulb and leave it on my snow at night.

As soon as I can, I will be getting two UTH's...I start work monday, so should get paid by friday :)

Another ?....BOTH of my tanks are sitting on wood surfaces. One is on a painted bookshelf and one is on a stained TV cabinet. Will the UTH heat hurt the surface of the wood or the paint? If so, I probably can't use one.

As long as you have them on stats, the UTHs won't get hot enough to damage either of the surfaces, or the snakes

you must get some stats then, UTH's CANNOT under ANY circumstance be used without them.

if you only have 2 snakes, you may be better off going for the cheaper alternative, and just have 2 dome lights with infrared heat bulbs. yes, most will say the UTH's are better because they provide belly heat. HOWEVER, i've used lamps for years, just fine. now that i have a bigger collection though, lamps are very impractical and i now use flexwatt, controlled by herpstats, which are rather expensive, especially if you only have 2 corns.

so i say, don't worry about the UTH's or t-stats, just use lamps.

I do use lamps now...but I'm not understanding the whole thermostat/UTH thing?

A UTH can easily give out temperatures exceeding 100*F, way too hot for corn snakes, so you would need a thermostat or a rheostat to control the heat output of the mat, i.e make it give out just enough heat to keep the warm side in the mid 80's :)

Okay, so the thermostat attaches to the UTH? Or something?
