Very Hot Glass!

Ok, so i finally set up my new tank today and it looks really really good! Problem is.... where the heat mat is under the glass, the glass in boiling! ive layered the aspen thick on top, but is there a way to cool the glass down a bit? Should i put some cloth on top of the heat matt? The temp is perfect for the hot side and the cold side but the bottom of the glass is just boiling!

Help!

UTHs get much to hot if they aren't controlled. The glass should only be 85. You can get a rheostat or thermostat from the pet store. Lamp dimmers work just as well as rheostats and cost half as much so you might look into that. Good luck!

I would suggest that you get a rheostat, or a thermostat, asap (to regulate the heat mat's output/temp). If your snake burrows, it could wind up being burned on the glass (which could = vet bills, &/or a "compromised" snake, &/or... depending... worse). In the meantime, you may want to turn off the heat mat.
Although it should be okay (snakes can be just fine, at house temps, as long as not fed if temps are low)... If you worry that your snake would get too cold (if your house temps are very cool), before you get a rheostat or thermostat,... use an alternate heat source.
The glass should be of a comfortable warmth/temp and should not be burning hot. Check the temp, of the glass, after you install a rheostat (allowing time, for it to adjust, first) &/or, if using a thermostat, set it to an appropriate temp.
The mat does not need to be very hot for its heat output to rise & warm the substrate.

Also, I do not know where you are measuring your temps from but ... temps should be from substrate level (IOW not the ambient temps from partway up the glass/tank, etc.).

Ok, i wont have to buy a new heat mat will i? I just bought this one day and it cost me £15 so I dont really want to have to waste it.

Hiya

I've got the Habistat Temperature Thermostat. You could get the most basic 'Mat Stat', but you would then need to monitor your temps yourself all of the time. Of course, you still need to keep an eye on them anyway, but not so vigilantly with a Temperature Thermostat. You shouldn't need to change your heat mat.

You say the glass is boiling hot. Does that mean you haven't got a thermometer with a probe? If not, then get one ASAP. Something like this:

I picked one up on Ebay for £6.99 inc. P&P. I also got my thermostat from there, saving about a fiver. If you can get them from one seller you might get a P&P discount so it'll be cheaper still.

If you don't want to turn your mat off (the wind has been going right through my house today), try insulating the glass from the mat using layers of newspaper.

You don't need to buy a new mat. Yours is probably in the 10-20 watt range.

I reccomend The Temperature Thermostat, just because they are much more accurate than the matstat and can regulate more cages with the one stat :p

I use them and pulse proportionals in my rack.

You set the temp, and check it with a probed thermometer, and adjust accordingly, then once you have the temp you want, the thermostat keeps the mat in that range by either turning it off and on, if it's a cheaper thermostat, or reducing the power to hold it at that temp, if it's a more expensive thermostat.

So you have to watch it while it is being adjusted, and make sure you know what the max temp is. I wouldn't let the max be more than 88F, and I'd shoot for more like 86-87F for the max.

this is a great help thankyou! What would you say was a good heat for the normal room temp to be in a vivarium?

You mean inside the viv? I'd say 70-80 would be preferable. Mine get down to 65 and up to 85. The hot side, right on the glass, should be 85F.

Nanci

the glass on the hot side gets about 80 for me so thats ok, but what about the cold side? Like general room temp? Sorry if im being a pain i just want to make sure I get this right!

Yep, room temps will be fine for your cool side. The most important temp to worry about is the warm side and to keep that at right around 85. Hope this helps and good luck with your little one.
