What critter would you recommend as a next pet?

NonVenomous

Bronny
Very unfortunately, my boyfriends Hamster just passed away from old age, she lived a VERY long life. Now we have the empty tank with all the items (non steel wheel, igloo, water dispenser, bedding and more than enough food, snacks and treats to last another 5 months) and we're thinking of getting another critter soon. I'm leaning towards a rat or a gerbil as I've always wanted both. He doesn't know what he wants, just not another long haired hamster as that is what Gaz was.

I know a few of you have critters out there, so what would you recommend as our next pet in the critter family?

Thanks.

Gerbils are fun because you can house them together, but they're not great for holding unless you really work with them. They're not really bitey, just verrrry squirmy.

I adore rats. I think they make wonderful pets, but depending on how large your cage is, it might not provide enough space. Plus, rats are very social and you'd need to have two (same sex) together. Another hamster might be perfect since you have everything specially created for them. If not a long hair like Gaz (RIP) maybe something completely different like a syrian black bear. They're so cute, IMO. Or those new tiny (robowoski or something like that). They're super tiny and bred not to bite, and you can house several together. They're soooo fast though that if one escaped, you'd probably never catch it, so keep that in mind.

I have two gerbils and i think they are fantastic if you are looking for something furry and fun to watch. Plus when you get them in same sex pairs they seem way more happy and explore thier habitat. Or i would recommend a leopard gecko. They need a different set up from a hamster but they are very cool looking and fun to watch as well. If looking for a furry friend tho i would go with a gerbil.

Rats are great. Until you fall asleep while they're out and wake up to find a huge hole in your shirt.

Oh, and don't let them get in your printer...

Or your boxspring....

Anyway, they're way more personable than other rodents.

Lol. No we want something furry this time. I'm really leaning towards some rats. :)

Subliminal whisper: *get some rats. GET SOME RATS*

You're so lucky! I'd LOVE to have rats. Unfortunately, the spouse says no. He grudgingly allowed me to get a 3rd dog (a "tiny" great pyrenese). Rolled his eyes at the hamsters, accepts my fish (he thinks it's wholesome) and somewhat tolerates my snakes. (thinks it's a twisted phase I'm going through) but he FIRMLY DREW THE LINE AT RATS! :crying:

I'm already excited for you!

My friends owns about as many rats as I own corns..lol..She tells me their just as addicting as corn snakes are to me..But they do seem like awesome pets..I do hold them sometimes when I go over her house..

How about a pet rock?

I second this.

I say rats. I have just one rat right now; her name is Chicken. She is wonderful. Everyone loves her. She was born in my closet by accident (someone bought a rat and couldn't keep her because apparently she was prego, so I took her). Anyway she loves people and is queen of the house when I put her in her run around ball! Rats are super friendly and silly. It can be really hard though because their life span is 2-3 years. I've seen some go 5 years and some go barely 2.

Anyway be sure to get two and I suggest females because you have a better chance of them getting along for the duration of their life. Try to pick littermates or cagemates from the store so they will get along. Believe me, trying to introduce two different rats, even only a month apart can be tricky. Be aware that rats are prone to tumors even as yearlings. But I still suggest them because of how much joy they bring to people. We have more rats than any other animal in my house (save for Bettas) and we love them!

I wish it were possible to own a bat. My boyfriend and I re-homed one that had somehow found it's way into the shop (large warehouse) he worked at. They're cute and furry!

I found a dying bat at the beach once. I took care of it until it died. It was cute.

I don't understand why people like rats - they smell funny, and poo and wee everywhere. Just ew... in my opinion.
