What did I buy?

Hi. I'm a new member and new (first time) snake owner. I was planning on attending the NY Reptile show in September to buy a snake there from a breeder. I have read enough posts on here to know it is better to purchase a snake from breeders and not big box pet shops. I was in a bigbox store to buy the tank and supplies and they had this guy up for adoption. The reason I was given was that it was in the store too long (6 weeks) I was given the feeding chart and told he/she was a "regular" corn snake. I couldn't resist the $15 pricetag. So my family is now the proud parent to this little guy (Zappa).

I still plan on attending the expo for more supplies and maybe pet number two(??) My kids are fighting over who's snake it is. But I was hoping someone could inform me of which morph we got?

Looking forward to sharing more pics to show it's growth. Thanks.

I would call that a nice light normal. That's the first time I've heard of a pet store putting a snake up for adoption because it's been there too long, though.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the newest addition to your family!

I'm not great with morphs so I'll defer to other members to answer that question. But if you want to see some great pics of different morphs, you should check out Ian's Vivarium. I suppose you narrow down the possibly morph that way.

Good luck with your buddy!

Me too.... and to me 6 weeks isnt even that long. I decided not to ask questions and pay as quick as possible.......

I would say he is a quite colorful normal. It will be interesting to watch him grow up and change color. He should be very pretty.

Thanks Hypnoctopus..... Based on everyone's advice further research on here has lead me to believe he is a normal (alabama)... Though that is just a guess form pics I have seen on here of a normal Alabama locality...

I feel "normal" is good enough for me at this point though any additional info would be appreciated. Thanks to all!

Pretty little normal/classic baby!
Unless it came from known locality Alabama parents, it is just a normal.

Alabama's haven't been refined yet, to start an "Alabama phase" like there is in the Miami (phase).

Alabama hatchlings typically look like Anery babies until they start to color up.

I like your name for him, Zappa. Are you a Frank Zappa fan (I am). Aptly named after Frank's song "Baby Snakes". :)

I AM a zappa fan. Definitely named for "Baby Snakes" but I also like to think it resembles his moustache?!?

I'm listening to waka jawaka right now.......

What are your (or anyone else's) thought on humidity? Do I really need to monitor it or is temperature monitoring enough?

Sorry for the slow reply stepconti....I don't monitor humidity but I do the temperature of course. I live in Cincinnati where it is pretty humid in the summer. When my Cornelius is starting to shed I usually mist his cage a couple times. He's never had a problem shedding.

Waka Jawaka-one of my favorites besides Uncle Meat and Burnt Weeny Sandwich.

Like safire6 said, it really depends on where you live. Corn snakes don't need a special humidity - 40% to 55% (about your house's normal should be fine). Too high humidity can cause an RI, so misting is not recommended.

The only time I pay attention to humidity is if I had a bad shed. For example, my vet recommended that I put a humid hide box in when my snake is shedding (just a closed hide with damp paper towels or moss and a small hole).

Other than that, as long as your house is not super dry, the water bowl evaporating should provide the ideal humidity.

thanks safire6 and jagodzinski.....

I am monitoring temp and will pay attention to humidity once he is shedding. I recently got the munson plan and will start weighing and sticking to that feeding plan as close as possible. THanks again.
