We are breeding our corns for the first and have done tons of research. We always put them on paper towels, and I believe that they have bred twice, but not sure. Two times we have put them together there was a tiny smear of something, but it was completely clear, and a tiny amount. The closest thing I can think of is it looked like the slime that a snail or slug leaves behind... Yesterday there were two spots of this and a dab of blood (not even a full drop) in each, which after reading leads me to believe that they have mated, and the female may have pulled away. Just curious what you experienced breeders think.

We have never actually seen them lock up, anytime someone watches, they look at us, so we try to give them privacy. I am pretty sure they did because of the and I stress TINY amount of slime ( I have to pick up the paper towels and rotate them in the light to see it), but because we didn't put either of them in brumation this year, I would think it is too early. Let me know what you think!

You might want to double check, but I think that you need permits to breed and sell corns in Kentucky. Also, if there has been a successful hook up usually you'll see quite a bit of nasty yellow goop afterwards.

We have spoken with the KY department of fish and wildlife. You only need them if the snakes you are breeding are not morphs. Ours are a snow stripe and a sunglow.

After a successful mating you will almost always see a thick yellow goo the color of lemon pudding. There is a distinctive smell, too. Usually if you put them together, they will mate within 15 minutes or so. So if you put them together, leave, and come back after 10-15 minutes, you'll likely catch them locked. I only leave mine together 30 minutes. If they are going to do it, they will in that amount of time.

Thanks Nanci, the first time there was a strong smell when I opened the container, and it had a slight yellow tint, but this last time, I didn't notice a smell and it was completely clear. I figure they won't do anything until march at the earliest, but I was hopeful!

After the female's first shed of the new year, I put the pair together every Sunday until they mate, then every three days until they quit.

That is what we have been doing, but we can't always be there every minute while they are together. I have put them together before and then had to leave for class for two hours, so that is why I wasn't sure about the slight amount of slime.

I keep my pairs together for months, from january to may.
I have never seen a breeding, but get fertile eggs.

I have never had any problems from keeping the pairs together, during the 20 years I've had cornsnakes.

As Nanci said, the evidence that clinches a mating has taken place even if you don't see the yellow gloop, is a distinctive smell that I like to call 'honeymoon'! I got quite a shock the first time I opened a tub after my snakes had mated, I hadn't expected their tub to smell quite like a wild weekend!

Thanks,I believe they mated the first time, but there wasn't a smell the second time, so maybe I am just getting excited for nothing. We will put them together every five days incase they have mated, but it won't stress them out too much if they haven't. Thanks everyone for all the help!
