What have I gotten myself into?

starsevol - Yeah, they guy said she has been on a "diet" and has lost some of the weight....so she apparently used to be even bigger.

P.s. - I JUST figured out that your name ia "loves rats" backwards...lol

Just figured that out,eh? LOL!!!!! (yup, rat snakes and ratties, guilty as charged your Honor!)
I would probably have a vet look at your girl but if she can shed by herself and acts normally you might want to swim her in the tub in water between 77-80 degrees (or very close to that). She may never lose the hips but it will tone her up.

The Hypo is gorgeous! Great find.

I have never seen a picture of a snake with "hips" (seems to not express the extent well enough) that large . . . ever. Diet-wise, I'd easily go 1 average sized mouse every two weeks maximum, maybe even three . . . along with exercise. She definitely won't starve. I'd almost take the risk to breed her to help take care of some of those fat reserves as well . . . after checking with a vet to make sure it's just fat (as Wade suggested). A lot of energy goes into breeding and while it would be a great risk due to her 'fleshy' sides, it may be a risk worth taking. :shrugs:

The poster mentioned that he was told that the snake laid slugs recently, so this is after a lay. That is very concerning. I hope it is just too much weight. Maybe she was previously housed in a small cage so she got little movement as well?

Well, big bertha shed last night....all one piece. My vet friend should be around at some point this weekend.....so we'll see what she says. I heard back from "the guy" again...and he said she is approximately 5-6 years old. He also said that when she laid her eggs was in the fall of 07...

Not here to give advice but if she was a dog you could train her to run on a treadmill. trying to be a joke ok not funny anyways Have you taken any more pictures? Good luck with her

I'm no expert, but I have heard of ways to exercise snakes to tone them up. Regardless, I'd worry about putting any seriously overweight person, animal, or snake on an exercise/diet regime without getting them checked out by a doctor. It can be dangerous for often overstressed systems to be overexerted, especially if there is a complicating physical factor.
Best of luck with the poor lady.

Here's an update on Valentina (named that because of the heart on her head)

We took her out to get some exercise and pose for some photos. Even though it's hard to tell from the photos, she's shaping up!

Have you taken her for a swim? My baby loves to swim--you should go visit Nanci and have the amel swim in the water garden. She is looking better being out and about!

LOL I'd love to visit Nanci and check out her compound!

Yes, she swims every week or two...and comes out to get some exercise regularly. I think she resents me sometimes for making her exercise....but tough!

I've cut her back to a smaller adult mouse every 2 weeks....and I even do kind of a "tug of war" with that to make her constrict and really work for it.

Indeed!

Recently I found out that a friend of mine actually saw her when she was in a pet store before I got her.....and she said that they were feeding her 2 or 3 ( I can't remember what she said) mice every week!

Whoa, what a little fattie! Great job getting her better again. I can't wait to see what she looks like in a couple of years. Keep us posted!

wow! o: Ive never seen a snake overwieght that much. Glad to see she's in good hands now though. Im sure she'll love you after helping her get her back to normal, even if she doesnt like it at times. lol

cant believe the pet store was feeding her 2-3 mice a week o: hope they dont feed the rest of their snakes like that.

Drew, I am utterly amazed and also PROUD to be on a forum with the likes of you. I can't believe the difference in that girl. Absolutely amazing.

So...I have hips like the "before" picture. Maybe I need to hire you as MY trainer!
