What is my corn?

I say, let the thought sink in before you get more.
really look at morphs and what it is that you want to get, something that YOU like, not what others like. It matters because if you like it, then when you're stuck with babies for a year, you'll at least like the ones you have!

Also, you won't break even from your start up cost with the first season, probably not even with the second added onto it. Consider that a good, small incubator costs around $50, then you need to get the rack to keep the hatchlings, then you need the food to feed the hatchlings.. it adds up FAST.

What I have done, is set up a bank account and anything for the snakes comes from there, and anything that I get from them (like sales) goes back into it. Unfortunately it never quite has money in it.. haha.

i do understand that much of the genetics. that is what i learned this past year in school:) so i understand up to that part with ressesive and dominant traits and figuring them out with punnet squares. after that i dont know, so if you could continue that would be GREAT!

i know i have to let the thought sink in. the SOONEST i would buy some baby corns would be about 4 or 5 MONTHS and then have to raise them to breeding age. so i have time to think. im not even sure if my parents will let me get MORE animals after this bird. lol. so might have to wait til i get am apartment:)and i am still looking at morphs i like the best. and if i can start in my house with my parents great, but when i get an apartment of my own, ill have to keep a few babies to turn into breeders and buy more, so i will have to like them:) thanks guys. im still figuring this out. if i find a new morph i like ill post it and find out what i need to breed to get it. so for now i guess ill keep learning about the genetics from you guys a bit and wait til after this bird and keep thinking!

Let me say this much, in case you did not know. An animal can hold multiple recessive traits.

Okay. Codominant traits work with one another. These are usually recessive traits, that if combined create a new phenotype.

In other words, if a snake holds two traits that are codominant to one another, than it will up as a new looking trait

If a snake holds this recessive trait, Amel:

and this recessive trait, Anery:

then the two will create this recessive trait, Snow:
SnowCornSnakeAdult001.jpg

While it looks different than an amel or an anery, it still holds both traits, so if you bred a snow back to an amel then the babies could still be amel.

In a sense. The reason the snow works is that the amel removed the black pigments out of the snake and the anery strips the red pigment. When they combine, you get a snake with no red or black in it. Here's another example.

The caramel is a snake that is genetically more yellow than a normal.

When you add amel to it, which removes the black, it becomes a butter.

If a snake holds this recessive trait, Amel:

and this recessive trait, Anery:

then the two will create this recessive trait, Snow:

Worth bearing in mind that from a practical breeding viewpoint, this will only be in the second generation. If you mate an Amel with an Anery, you'll get all Normals which carry the recessive traits for both Amel and Anery.

If you raise two of these offspring and mate them together when adult, then you'll get offspring which will statistically include some Snows.

When it comes to breeding, in order to make a butter you would have to have one of these combos.-

Amel het caramel X Amel het caramel

Amel het caramel X Caramel het amel

Amel het caramel X Normal het Caramel, amel

Caramel het amel X Caramel het amel

Caramel het amel X Normal het caramel, amel.

Both parents have to have both traits for the offspring to show it.

really?? wow. how come? like i said, i know nothing about the different morphs and genetics.

.............That is why.

Please don't take this the wrong way, because I am trying to help. You need to learn a heck of a lot more about cornsnake husbandry and genetics before getting yourself in this stuff. I would suggest a good inexpensive book or two on cornsnakes found in almost any pet store and online.

If you don't learn more about what you plan on getting yourself into FIRST, you will only get very frustrated and the SNAKES will be the ones that will truly suffer for it. I am letting you know this from MANY years of snake experience. It is not as easy and "fun" as it all might sound to you right now, although it certainly can be in the right circumstances. You will need to care for all these snakes, house them seperately, get them to feed several times before selling them, maintain them well until they are ever sold. Not to mention understanding some of the basic genetic principles to ever produce the things you expect to that interest you. If not you will be wasting all sorts of time (literally years), money and effort spinning your wheels.

Some inexpensive cornsnake books like Kathy Love's and Don Soderber's books will be the best thing you ever did for yourself. ...........I kid you not!!

i know i need to do a TON more research on this. i will most certinly buy at least 2 or 3 books about it too. i am looking at some more stuff right now. thanks guys.
