So Many Morphs...
I bought a new snake today, it was at a pet store in another city(I know, I swore I would never trust a pet store snake again but I thought she was so gorgeous). I know what they sold her to me as, but I have suspicions that they were wrong and I would like the experts opinions. I tried not to overload you all with to many pics but I wanted to make sure you got a good true likeness.

So am I seeing Hurricane Motley with the cubed effect? and what morph would she be? Would she qualify as a Sunglow?

Thx for looking.

Lovely amel motley! I wouldn't call it a sunglow as I can see some white saddle bands. I also wouldn't call it a hurricane motley as the color isn't concentrated around the "dots". It also wouldn't surprise me if it was het caramel.

Susan can you explain to me better about Hurricane Motley so I understand it because I am not sure I understand what you said about it. And what makes you think ph Caramel? And do sunglows have to have absolutely no white where the saddle bands would be, instead of very little or none? Oh and does she qualify for cubed?

This is from South Mountain Reptiles (Don Soderberg) and is as good an explanation of what makes a hurricane motley as any. For more photos of examples, check out his website...the photo gallery...corn snakes. Your snake just has a more "faded" saddle band color overall.

IMO, a sunglow should have no white dorsally, period, and especially if it's a motley as that reduces the saddle bands in the first place.

I think possible het caramel just because of the shade of orange that particular snake is. It's a personally subjective call on my part.

As for being cubed...no. She looks to be homozygous motley, not stripe, of which cubed is a variation of. The cubed pattern has more squared off edges that don't bend toward the center "dot". There also tends to be more space between the cubes and you'll often see at least some stripe pattern, especially at the neck.

Cool, thank you for the mini genetics lesson, I really appreciate it. Once I breed, I hope to be able to have a pretty good idea of what I am selling!

Thx guys, I found her so pretty and she reminded me of one of my first corns, rest his soul, that I just had to have her!

My normal motley ph caramel boy looks a lot like yours! Hes is not an amel, but its amazing how much they look alike. I got him as a ph for caramel and amel. I suspect hes het caramel, and I will be proving that out next year! Just by how much ours look alike, caramel might be in the mix.

Oh, and your girl is gorgeous!

Congrats, T!! I can't believe I got the morph right before seeing the answers. I'm HORRIBLE at IDing.

No one's mentioned it, so for any new folks reading this, just remember to quarantine him/her away from the rest of your collection, especially since it came from a petstore. I have no issues with petstore purchases as a whole, but you just never know what kind of mites, etc you might bring home along with your new pet.

Beautiful new addition. Thanks for the nice shots!

ratsncorns...your not kidding they look alike! They could have been siblings.

Lori, I already have her in my quarintine room, but I only have one room to quarintine with at this time(because of the daycare) so hopefully her and the other 3 noobs in quarantine all turn out to be fine. The other three came from one place so I was not worried about it.

I might even ask my teen, if I can quarantine in his room.

i would say amel motley with maybe a hurricane variation? not sure... but i wouldn't put my hopes and dreams on the hurricane part, it does fit the bill in my opinion.

ph means possible het (heterozygous). So my normal motley might carry the amelanistic and/or caramel gene but the only way to find out is by breeding trials.
