Hi~ I would like to get my first snake. After reading all I can, I am really afraid of the critter escaping, especially since I am considering a baby. What is your advice on the best type of caging. I like the critter cage with the sliding top, but have read bad reviews. Thanks for any advice.

I put mine in a 20gallon long tank with a screen top. I also bought clips (made by Zilla I think) that basically hook the lid onto the tank itself so it cannot be pushed up.

I have nine Critter Cages. I can't imagine why they would get a bad review. The sliding, locking lid works perfectly as long as you close it correctly, making sure you have the lid in the rails, hearing the click of the lock, and then pulling back gently to make sure it is locked.

Im with Nanci, I use a locking slide top on my glass snake aquarium. I was a camp counselor at the St. Louis Zoo for a time, (where I learned to love snakes) and while I did not actually take care of any of the animals (trained keepers did that) I know for a fact that one of the demonstration snakes we used was kept in a locking slide top aquarium that also utilized clips as a secondary escape mechanism (Hence why I use that setup). In the two years I worked there, we had one escape. The reason-One of the counselors forgot to put the lid back on.

Thanks for the advice. I'll use the clips as an added precaution. BTW, a10airknight, been following your issue, and am looking at the babies from pj as well. They are beautifull. I think maybe we can't go wrong with one of those guys. The one you picked looks really nice. Good luck with your new baby.

Thanks, good luck to you too! What are your enclosure's dimensions? My first baby didnt get out, but part of that was because the tank was too tall for it to climb at that point in its life.

I agree that PJ's snakes look really nice, and from talking to him its clear that he really knows what he is doing, I have no doubt that my new yearling girl is going to be healthy and in great shape

From what I have been reading, the small plastic critter cages work best for babies. I met someone who has a very docile, healthy 1.5 year old corn with a 20L critter cage with sliding top. It comes with everything(heating pad to use in winter, day light, red night light, lots of diff. hides to interchange) and I can get it for $75. I am torn whether or not to get a little bit older snake who has been well socialized and comes with everything, or a baby that I can start from scratch with. What do you think?

No thermostat. He has had the snake since Feb. 08. They are expecting their first baby and the wife feels uncomfortable having the snake. The only other pet is a dog. It has been handled daily and is very friendly. Seems to be very well cared for. . . well established. He really doesn't want to get rid of it, but she is making him. I held it and it was really nice. But, I kinda wanted to get a baby.

Obviously, that is your decision. You would need a thermostat though (for reason why remember what happened to me because I didnt use my "broken" stat). It would be pricier to get a baby regardless, it does seem like your friend is giving you a pretty good deal, although the more experienced members of the forum are certainly able to give much better advice on this matter than I can
