When do I switch to a bigger home?

My Corn Bella is 4 months old. I have her in a 20 gallon tank with a screen lid right now and I'm wondering when I should upgrade? She's about 15 inches right now but I want her to have plenty of room! Is it a bad idea to put her in the next size up so soon?

As long as you can find her in a bigger enclosure, that's fine. And as long as it's escape proof.

A lot of folks keep a corn snake in a 20 gal indefinitely. Generally 10 gal are for babies and then 20 gal for adults. You can certainly go bigger if you want to but you don't have to. I put Rufus in a 30 gal several months ago and I plan to leave him there. It should be big enough for the long term.

Now you might have to enlarge water bowls and hide boxes as the snake grows regardless of the size of the tank.

Ok she's only about 17 inches right now so I guess I'll just keep her in the 10 gallon for a while and upgrade in a few months

your snake should love that and be happy forever. You won't need another tank. What about the lid? Does it have a top? You're not planning to use that cardboard are you?

No no no I'm not using the cardboard lol!! I had to order a lid because I couldn't find one in any local stores

That tank looks great. It's a wonderful size.

Feel free to ask plenty of questions about securing the lid. I lost my first corn snake (that I still hope may turn up) from a lid I thought was secure but wasn't. He was able to unlatch it and push out the corner. I don't want that to happen to anyone else.

It already happen to me with a red tail boa once and I was so upset for the longest time!! Ever since then I am SUPER careful with the lids!! Thank you though honestly I am always looking to learn new techniques on making sure my babies are safe and secure!!

Oh I'm so sorry. I wouldn't wish that on anyone! I guess you are pretty much as paranoid about it as I am then.

Oh yeah I triple check everything before I leave for work and I have clips, weights, and tape holding the screen top down (tape on the outside so she can't touch it) and I still worry about it all day at work

I hear you. Mine have clips on each end and Velcro straps encircling, and the corners are blocked with weatherstripping hot glued in so a snakey nose can't even go there. I literally pull up on all four sides and all four corners each time I secure the lid to double check.

Nicole! You stole that 40 gal tank! Great find. I'm going to look around (I keep one eye on Craigslist) and maybe I'll find a 29 gal which would be perfect for me. I too have some time to look! My little guy is also in a 10 gal for the time being.

Just to be safe you might want to get either locks for the lid (you can buy them seperatly), or find something to weigh the lid down. I think the tank looks perfect, and will most likely be a great space for your snake for the rest of its life.

Search the forums for some terrarium set ups. There are great ways to utilize the space of your 20L! Corns definitely like ground space more than height, so this tank is perfect. Some also like to hang out in hammocks, or in "foliage" (fake plants).
