When to remove the dad

Ok I have currently got 2 really good breeding stock going and my current problem is one of my mums is a great breeder but as soon as she gives birth then 3 weeks later I have more, not much of a problem for me as I have 13 hatchlings to feed so at the moment so I tend to remove most of her pinks and just leave her about 4 pinks.

Anyway my question is when should I remove the male to give her a break she has had about 4 litters so far. My other girls I have no problem removing their male and he just goes back in with no problems but the other girl is a bit of a nightmare and I worry if I take him out she wont take him back again.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Personally, I never remove males from any colonies (whether they be mice, rat or ASF). Too many potential problems when you try to reintroduce the male. I keep charts for each bin and when production slows down to about half, I replace the mice in those bins with younger models.

I only have 3 snakes. I remove my males 7 to 10 days after being put together, before females have their babies so they don't get pregnant immediately again. When reintroducing them I put the male in breeding cage by himself for a week, then put females in with him after they have been separating from there weanings. I have never had a male injured or killed. Hope this helps you. Most people leave there males and females together.

Maybe it looks like they are fighting when he really just trying to mate with her. Maybe she is in season. Or maybe you have two males .

I am thinking about doing this with my snake... buying 3 mice and breeding them. What would you do with the extras? Just pop them in the freezer? I don't know :-/

I have 3 snakes. All require different sizes o food. New butter eats pinkies. Motley eats hoppers. Amel eats 4-5 weeks and older. For me, at 2-4 days I take out 6 to 8 babies and put them into the freezer . At 2 weeks old I thin them down to (9-10 babies left with moms). At 3 to 3-1/2 weeks I separate males from females. At 4-1/2 and older males go down, females that are not being kept for replacements also go down. Use CO2 to euathanize.

yes all my pinkies go straight into the freezer but once they start growing fur then they have to be Co2. Hope that helps.

I never remove males from colonies. They are an important part of mouse society and they actually take care of the babies too, though obviously they can't feed them. I used to have a really paranoid mouse mom who used to move her kids out of the nest everytime I appeared, Dad would then go fetch them and patiently put them back in the nest and groom them. It was too sweet!

You can have trouble when reintroducing the male as well. Also, as mice (all rodents) are social creatures, you would have to get another male mouse to keep the first male company while he is seperated...which creates alot of unnecessary work and effort. lol

Best just leave them in there. :)

yeah think I will leave the man in there dont want to rock the boat to much and they are happy think I will just remove some of her weanings but leave a couple of girls. My other cage I had to remove the male as he was poorly bad reaction to the bedding but he is a lot better now so as her babies are now nearly 3 weeks I will reintroduce him.

Agree with leaving the male. I would not remove all the babies from the Mom either as this can cause mammary problems. When I would raise mice, I would leave 3-4 babies.

well I have kept one of the male and female together and in my other container I have had a big move around.

I have 2 full adults in there and although upto now I havent had problems with them breeding but the last couple of litters they have eaten some of the pinks and I dont know why, they did use to have a older lady in with them and although she was too old to breed she used to help with the babies but she died. I have now put the male back in with them and put them into a smaller cage where I can keep a closer eye on them.

The big viv that they were in I have now put some new younger blood in 1:3 ratio and hope I will have better luck.
