Where do you keep your food supply?

Ok, silly question, I know...but does everyone just store their frozen mice/rats in their kitchen freezer? Or do you have a mini fridge/freezer? Can the mice be put in one of those small fridges or definitely have to be kept frozen? How many do you keep on hand at a time? Thanks

If you're keeping anything longer than a couple days to a week, I'd say its gotta be frozen.
I do have a little chest freezer for my feeders, but you could probably keep them in the food freezer if others in the house don't mind. Others in my house do unfortunately.

I tried keeping everything in my kitchen freezer, but that just didn't go well. I just didn't have the room for a 3 months supply to sustain 60+ snakes. Also, my normal kitchen freezer had my rats frost burned after 2 months. Now I have a seperate freezer in my garage that keeps a lower temp. I'm not sure of the exact measurements, but it is HUGE. I found it on Craigs List for free. If you keep an eye out in the local classifieds, you can find one every once in a while.

In the chest freezer between the ice cream and Eggo's. I kind of over-bought when we got Smokey and Queenie so I am still using food I got in January and February. I have had to throw away some pinkies and fuzzies because of freezer burn but so far everything else is okay.

My snakes have their own drawer in my freezer. My grandpa doesn't seem to care, or at least he hasn't said anything yet.

We have a Fridge in the house, and in the garage. I keep mine in the freezer in the garage. My parents told me that was the only way I'd have frozen mice, so I deal with it. Its not like its a far walk! I kind of overstocked too though, lol. I bought about 100 more mice than I needed. I'll need em sometime I guess. :shrugs:

Mine are sorted by size, in two big square Gladware containers, in ziplock bags. The vacuum-sealed packs I haven't opened are in the empty ice maker that doesn't work!

In my apartment, we have two units: fridge and freezer for (human) food items, and fridge and freezer for alcohol, snake food, and pizza. I also got my extra on Craigslist. It wasn't free, but it was pretty cheap. Since everyone uses it, we're all happy to chip in for the extra cost.

When I was with my parents it was in our freezer in the garage in a tupperwear container.

It's in the kitchen freezer here with my bf now, but I keep it in the container now just to keep it...contained!

I buy big orders from the Mouse Factory, so I have lots of rodents in my freezer. The funny thing is I do have a mini fridge, and if i turn it on high the whole thing turns into a freezer. I still haven't transfered my mice and rats to it though.

As far as keeping rodents in the freezer for a long time, they'll stay good as long as the seal isn't broken on their packages. For the "in use" packages that are open I store my mice in zip lock baggies. This helps minimize freezer burn. It's especially nice to keep things I don't go through very quickly like small pinks

Mine were in the original bag, then a zip lock-I guess I didn't get all the air out when I re-sealed the bag. I am hoping to get through them before too long; the newest members are eating the mouse pinkies and fuzzies and then will move up to rat pinkies. The older guys are still working on weaned rat pups, lg and xl mice, chicks and quails. But I don't think I'd order the birds again; maybe just stick with rodents. When the boas get big enough, then geunie pigs (can't spell this morning). Eventually I'll have a small freezer just for their food. I was also going to look into one of those electric wine coolers for brumation, seems the temps can be adjusted on them.

Thanks everyone! I am going to check out craig's list. In the mean time I will probably just get a tupperware container to separate them.

We don't keep much in the freezer at our house, so I just keep them in the freezer next to the bag of party ice from the C-Store. Man I hate ice cubes I make myself from trays. :grin01:
