Where does one find affordable frozen mice?

Okay, fellow snake-feeders... it's been years since I've needed mice for a snake. I used to raise my own rats and mice, but in my current situation that is not possible, nor is it desirable. I've been alarmed at the price of mail order frozen mice, entirely due to the exorbitant shipping costs. My only local resource here in SW Washington State would appear to be Petsmart or Petco. And I've just picked up a dozen frozen from them - at over 6 dollars per three adult mice. Can you kindly refer me to the best supplier of affordable frozen mice, if there is such a thing? Thank you! Svafnir

Svafnir, in small quantities, shipping is really difficult to offset. I would check Craigslist or local want ads, Google, etc. and try to find some local breeders or perhaps a local herp club. There have also been some issues at some of the big mice companies, and prices are high right now. Good luck!

This is like the gas shortages in the 1970s. All this talk of a mouse shortage makes me think I should stock up, even though I don't need any.

Best bet is to check around for your local Herp society and see if there are multiple folks interested in doing mass orders, then you can split the shipping costs up and make them much more affordable.

Another thing is to see if there's any nearby reptile shows, many of the bigger suppliers frequent those shows, and you can often "pre-order" with them to get discounts off of the show-price (often down to the non-shipping internet prices).

Yes, I'm finding lots of out of stock notifications. It would appear demand has outstripped supply in many cases, a predictable problem given the ever-increasing numbers of snakes (and predatory lizards) being kept now. :-(

Thanks, though, everyone for the advice.

I don't think this is a product of more creatures eating the mice, Salmonella or some pathogen is almost certainly to blame.

I drive well over an hour to our state's reptile expo and pick up 50-100 in vacuum sealed bags, I save a ton of money even though I pay to get in and the gas to get there {drive a F250 truck}. If not for that, I'd be stuck paying the ridiculous prices at the pet stores.

I am not familiar at with WA, but if this isn't all that far off from you it would be worth the ride to pick them up there plus you get to check out all the critters there too, lol... http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116032

This sounds like the best option, and there is an annual reptile show of that nature in Portland, OR (Wilsonville) once a year. I will make sure to go next summer. Thank you, HermesMom. :)

I see that you've already made conact on the local herp society forum.
There's still a couple local people that sell feeder rodents. I think someone mentioned Brandon Winters, who is south of Seattle. He might be your best bet.
There's also Glacier Rodents, who is a local rodent breeder, & he's usually at local expos.
There's an expo Oct 13 & 14 at the Puyallup fairgrounds NW Captive Bred Expo & I think Billy (Glacier Rodents) will be there. (He's also known as Slippery Creek Ranch).
