I am interested in entering a local photography competition at the fair at the end of summer. I am an amateur photographer and like playing around with the camera, but have never taken formal classes (or really know what I’m doing sometimes ;)).

I love great photography that is genuine and interesting. Problem is, I’m not sure any of my shots are! Could you please tell me if you think any of the following are worth entering in one of the many fair categories?

Please be honest and please critique! Tell me which you love, hate, or how it could be improved.

Thanks!

I have to agree, #3. They're all great, it's just that #3 in particular is such a unique shot.

#3 is from taking a redeye out of Phoenix. The amount of lights and streets and just city life that exist in the middle of desert are astonishing.

Thanks for the comments and votes. I don't think any of those photos are spectacular by any means, but I am trying to learn how to better critique my own and taken better shots.

The dog is nice. I like the color contrast of the grass in the background. And I love the sunrise on the beach (had to look at where your from to determine that lol here it would be sunset* on the beach) But then of course I am kinda partial to ocean pics ;) The black and white spider is a little hard to see. The city looks cool though. Good luck with the contest.

The pic I like least is the one of with the pebbles in the sand. They just really don't do anything for me. Not terribly interesting. My favorites are number 5 and number 6. I love the eerie ambiance I see in the nearly monochromatic photo. It looks like something out of a dream. The photo of the beach, with the sun low on the horizon is beautiful. I love the colors, I love the composition, and I even like the way that you haven't rotated the photo to make the horizon level with the paper. What a neat pic!

The other one that I like, and dog knows why, because I hate spiders, is that B&W of the Granddaddy Longlegs.

3 and 5 are my favorites. The dogs tongue in 1 makes me dizzy lol 2- um I just dont do well with bugs! love black and white photos though! 6 and 7 just dont draw my attention like 3 and 5 did. Good luck!

My opinion only...

#1-Too common. As well, the top of the dog's head is missing, which throws the composition out of balance. This gives it the feeling of a quick "snapshot", rather than a composed portrait.

#2-Very nice composition, but the shallow depth of field feels wrong. The body of the spider, in sharp focus, is dead center to your composition, making it feel flat and static. A different angle, placing the body off-center and either higher or lower point of view, would have worked better, in my opinion.

#3-Outstanding shot. Take it into photoshop and clean up the noise, and this one could work very well.

#4-Another common subject. Getting in closer to the water drops would focus attention on them, rather than the leaf.

#5-A longer exposure and a straight horizon would work wonders for this shot. The color and composition work well, with plenty of interesting foreground textures, but the static waves and the heavy lean are very distracting.

#6-Blown out sky and underexposed shed are competing for attention. A more balanced exposure, such as a graduated neutral density filter or HDR, would give a more appealing final image.

#7-Great concept, but the execution is a let down. Get your camera closer to the ground. This will give your lines much more length, and make you pebbles look bigger, giving the picture much more visual interest. This is another fairly common subject, so get low, get creative, and wait for low-angle sun to cast some really long shadows and make the sand grain texture really pop.

In the end, I think #3 is your winner, but you need to clean up that noise before you print it. Too much digital noise can kill a great print...

The spider shot really shows why I really don't like that type of spider, those long legs... yikes! Great photo though! I also like the beach/sea photo.
