Who Ya Gonna Call?

Nanci, seriously, this has to stop. First the water garden, then the racks...and NOW you have a wild black racer living on your property? Where does it end? :sidestep:

Kidding...though I an envious AGAIN. Great story!

LOL My friend with the black rat hasn't asked me to come remove it. She just keeps contacting me for reassurance that she's too big for dinner even if slathered in ketchup :) I wouldn't mind removing one of those... the adults really are so calm. I've always figured they were saying... if I don't move she won't see me..... :) Then there was the juvenile that my gelding herded around the indoor with snorts and blows of air and it never once offered to bite him on the nose. I love black rats :)

I'd be thrilled that it was still hanging around... much safer around your house than most houses :)

As you can see, black racers have a VERY different temperment from black rats!! I sort of wanted him to tame down, because he was a cute little snake with his battle scars and stubby tail, but no, he wasn't interested in being a pet.

There was a black racer that used to hang out in my parents back yard. I'd caught him a couple of times, and he never bit me. He was as calm as could be, and just a real nice snake. I'm gonna try and find him again when I go to their house. Come to think of it, I've NEVER been bitten by a racer! The wild corns by their house wanted my blood, but the racers never did. Good looking catch, though!

He doesn't know what he's missing out on... I wouldn't mind coming back as one of your snakes :D

They are really tough to catch. Usually you can't get close before they run. Not like a yellow rat that coils up and strikes and says "Go ahead, make my day!" or a corn that's like "Hey! Nice to meet you! Let's cuddle!" Luckily this one was fenced in by a house and steps on two sides, and I only had holly bushes to deal with, not a big tangle of underbrush like you'd have in the wild, and I could crawl around on the ground.

The only other two black racers I have caught have been babies- both non-stop biters.

So I told my friend that I rescued the snake from that I'd seen him again. She says "Ooooh! We have to have a name for him! I want to name him Onyx!" Maybe she'll be more tolerant when Onyx #2 shows up to take Onyx's place...

I must have missed this the first time around Nanci! That's cool that you caught him and I had to laugh all through the story with your comments about the snake's attitude and your friend's reaction when it bit you.

Have you seen him again since when you were mowing the yard?

This was fun to read! Nice pics and story! He is so handsome, and that look in the second picture, like he's saying, "Yes, you are about to get bitten." lol

Kudos for leaving him a grass patch!
