Why do people worry so much?

I confess- I am a worrier. I'm worried about the Snausage and her regurge and if she will eat again. I'm worried about Dave123's hatchling with the hanging out "stuff." Every time a newbie posts about a regurge, or a baby not eating, or MIA, or when the regulars post about egg-bound females, or WHATEVER, I worry until the issue is resolved. My snakes don't usually cause me to worry, and for that, I am thankful. I pretty much don't worry about poo, though. In fact, I barely notice it.

And this makes life less sh***y for all of us!

I'm sorry... I just HAD to. The horrible pun was calling my name and I just couldn't resist....

I apologize for my actions and will now go sit in the corner.

Well.... I may have been the cause for Jen's starting this thread in the first place... 'cause a corn that I purchased from her decided to "go off schedule". I posted several threads and I let her know about it. He has since come back to eating normally... Thanks, Jen!

I guess the reason that I panicked out, was because I take their little lives so seriously. IF I get them and they're good feeder's where they came from, why aren't they good feeders for me? Is it something I'm doing wrong? Did I SCREW UP?

And if I did "SCREW UP," then am I going to lose the $$$ that I've put into this snake? If any of you have looked at my profile, you'll see that I have 13 kids to take care of since I work at a Children's Home. So, being in the "Social Service" occupation means that money is at a premium. Losing a snake for me, is a loss of funds too and it is also another "I told you so" from the wife! LOL.

It might also be that since I have less, each is intrinsically more valuable to me than one from a person who has several hundred snakes.

Finally, it might also be that I did lose ALL of my snakes before. A couple of years ago, I had 13 snakes in our old house (which was about 50 yards away from where I'm typing now). Well, on a Sunday, I fed all the snakes, cleaned up any poop, turned out the lights and probably told them I'd be back on Wednesday to check in on them. Sometime between that moment and Tuesday afternoon, the A/C went out in that building. It was the middle of summer and the temps here probably went over 113 that day. Soooo, inside with no A/C.... probably well over 100 degrees... probably approached 113... could have been higher -- and I didn't know. Tuesday evening, my wife goes in to feed her bearded dragon... and finds all my snakes dead. She calls me and I come running over to see each snake and the agony that they suffered from having been in that oven for what could be 48 hours. One of them, a 5-6 ft. Taiwan Beauty that was given to me by a girl who was in our dorm but had since moved on, was all contorted with its mouth wide open as if screaming...

Needless to say, I was devastated. Should I have checked on them every day? Was 3 days too long to be away from them? Did the A/C go out on Monday? Morning, afternoon or evening? Let me tell you, I was pretty diligent in my care for them and, but for this STUPID A/C failure, I'm sure they'd all be here today.

Sooo, maybe I overcompensate for that loss/tragedy, by worrying over a missed meal. Maybe each time I look at one of these new snakes, I see the lost 13. I don't know. But I do know that I NEVER want to lose another one because of something that might be my fault.

Oh man, that is a horrible story. I would be watchong my snakes like a hawk too if something like that happened to me. I understand...
Actually it's not you at all, there is a new member who is probably the main reason why I started this thread, I think it is already obvious to a few of you. And in general a couple of others that ask questions in chat like "My snake shed, can I handle it yet? I fed my snake yesterday can I feed it again today?" I guess its mean but it's that this information that can be had by using the search button. But by using the search button, they don't get to become the center of attention...
But now that I think about it, I may have embarassed a couple of people with this thread and if I have I am sorry. Like I said in my first post maybe I just don't worry enough!
I really am glad those babies are eating for you now, though. Fred!

I read this forum by searching for New Posts. This morning there were two posts on the first page, Is My Snake Too Fat? and Is My Snake Too Skinny? (Or soemthing like that).

We need "Is my snake just right?" to fill the picture then! Reminds me of Goldilocks and the three bears.

Good thread Jen!

Well I'm glad it's pretty normal to get a little irked by some of the repetitive posts, I thought I was just letting it get to me and I was being awful just ignoring most of them.

I know we were all newbies once, but I believe someone said earlier "common sense is not as common as it used to be" or something like that...lol...and I think it's true.....but....one of the things that really irk me, is when someone asks a question and an experienced member answers with all the information needed, then you get x amount of other replies stating exactly the same thing, over and over. It's really easy just to say, " I agree with so and so, they've given you good advice", rather than repeat almost word for word what has already been said, or just don't post at all. (wade might know what I mean, he got rep from me earlier because of that) ;)

As for keeping records, well yes I do, I record feeding (my corns are on a variable schedule), weighing (about once a month or so for young ones and females during breeding season), shedding and pairings through to hatchlings. The only time I record anything else, is if it's something out of the ordinary and I find out if it's out of the ordinary, by going back over my previous records, then searching the forum and talking to my local rep guy. 99.9% of the time it's ordinary, so I don't worry about it. Oh and I don't record poop, unless it's out of the ordinary ;)

Oh and I dare someone to start a "is my snake just right?" thread :D

I know what you mean Susie.

What makes me mad is when you say something that is perfectly obvious what you are saying and then some one will correct you by nit picking your choice of words. I try to not get angry and snap back at people, but there are a couple of people that really get under my skin. :devil01:

Oh, I shouldn't have read this one this morning.

You know who is really good, Kathy Love. She never gets mad. Never gets involved in arguments. Always has a helpful answer. If she doesn't like what is said, she just doesn't comment.

Kathy, I'm impressed. I could learn from you.

You know what bugs me- the I Lost My Snake threads. Can't you just buy an escape-proof viv??? And I'm speaking as one who has lost two snakes out of feeding bins (by prying up the lids). Now even my feeding bins are like Fort Knox. One snake was found immediately, and poor Mr. Bacon was relentlessly stalked until he revealed himself in a couple hours. Although he had by then reverted to The Wild!

The thing is this is a Corn snake forum, and corn snakes are regarded as beginner/starter snakes. If you look at the membership, loads of new people join up at this time of the year, it coincides with the start of sales of new snakes. Lots of these people will post like mad for a while, maybe a year and then they disappear, or thats how it seems to me.
But I will agree on the statement 'They didn't like the answer they were given'......
Good thread though Jen......

I feel bad about something. You know the ton of threads about non-feeders this summer? I listed a whole bunch of methods, and a person who had already asked a million questions about different methods PM'd me and demanded a list, in order, of what would have the most chance of working. I didn't reply. That is not like me, but I don't know!!! Every baby is different, every person has different resources available, for a foreign country- I don't know! I feel badly, though.

Now I feel bad about posting my lost snake thread :( ;)

But in my defense, I was really ill at the time and I wasn't actually asking for advice on how to recapture her, I was seeking moral support more than anything, because I was feeling so low, please forgive me Nanci  ;)

And I'M sorry for posting that Beans got loose! In my defense, who knew a hamster could use a screwdriver?

:sidestep:

You didn't lose your snake, she got let out! Not by you!! And was recaptured in a timely fashion! You didn't lose your very first snake within a week of getting it.

I'm with Nanci on this one... This is one area where people need to be a bit MORE anal. There's a definite system of LEVELS regarding losing a snake:

10... "I put the snake on the floor, and then went into another room for 20 minutes."
9...
8...
7... "I made a dumb mistake and found out exactly how opportunistic snakes can be."
6...
5...
4... "My setup served me well for quite awhile, but there must've been some tiny way out."
3...
2...
1... "I have a padlocked viv with a motion sensing alarm system and the dang thing STILL escaped."

Personally, I say we make it into a game. Divide your 'escape score' by the number of snakes in your collection. Lowest number wins!

My score is 9.5...

I do have an escaped and never recovered toad...(I think he went out the open back door). :-( It happened the evening Lily arrived unannounced from Rich Z (because the tracking info got eaten by my junk mail filter) and I arrived home from work at 5PM to find the most expensive snake I'd ever bought sitting in the driveway just feet from a 55 mph road. I also left my keys in the door all night. Sweet Pea escaped once that afternoon and was recaptured, but I didn't change his bin, and he escaped again, and I didn't notice the giant toad clomping around the house, apparently.

My score would be 10.5. "I let my 6 yo son hold my snake while I cleaned the viv and came back to find the snake on the floor while my son was engrossed in the latest episode of Max and Ruby".

Fortunately, my snake had more common sense than my son and hung out near his viv stand. I think he knew it was feeding night.

Lori, did you figure it right? Actually, I divided my collection by the number of escapes. Otherwise my score would be .105263157895.
