WIR rota

I agree... we have our 4 permenant writers. It's nice to have people to fill in but anymore than 4 writers and my head would fall off lol.
I thought the W.I.R. was open for anyone to be able to post one if they choose to. I understand there are "permanent" writers that are on a rotation but I thought if someone just wanted to post there own they would be able to do so. Not that I will be posting one anytime in the near future, I just thought it was set-up this way. Is it not? :shrugs:
Jay

No no you can't just post a WIR when you feel like it lol. If that were the case there would be duplicates of the same week etc...

Well it was originally my idea, and there was only one writer - me. But I opened that up to 3 other people as the workload was too much, and there have been a few "guest" writers. By all means if you want a turn ask one of the permenant writers, me, toyah, rich and steph. I am unable to do my next turn so there is a slot open if you want to do that.

What needs to happen, and I'm only speaking as one of the people who helped get the forum for the WIR, is those people who are signing up for the WIR need to get it done in a timely manner. Originally, Elle was getting the WIR's posted on Sunday/Monday for the previous week. They are still valuable getting posted on Wednesday/Thursday, but they aren't so timely any longer.

IF there are people breaking down the door to help post WIR's, then they should be added to the rotation because quite honestly, right now the rotation really isn't a rotation. :shrugs: I completely understand the inconvenience of life and things getting in the way that hinder the creation of the WIR. I also completely understand that those who are doing it are undertaking a rather large voluntary task. BUT, when the WIR was originally discussed the biggest "votes" against a WIR thread was the crazy idea that it wouldn't be, or stay, regular . . . well fast forward to the past few months . . . it's hasn't been regular.

Someone suggested using the calendar to schedule who's responsible for each week's week in review. I would also suggest the WIR does it's best to get posted on Sunday or Monday. I'd also suggest that someone is responsible for sending out a reminder PM to the person that's voluntarily responsible for that given week on Friday/Saturday of that week. I'd gladly facilitate that IF needed.

Just some humble suggestions. :) Please don't shoot the messenger!!

I absolutly agree Brent, I have become lax in part to play. I fully agree with you about the calander and reminding people when it needs to be done. I am terrible for being late, so I feel bad for reminding others when THEY are late...

I agree with all of your points here, Brent. The effort seems to have been somewhat disorganized for some time, and considering that Rich has given free site space for the feature, I think the coordinators owe it to him to get organized.

I don't think we need competing WIRs for the same time-frames. Only so much repetition of posted material can be encouraged. But of course, private forum owners have every right to compile their own WIRs in their own forums if they choose to do so. But don't hold your breath waiting for me to compile one in Roy's Serpent Lounge. ;)

When I make a WIR, I always look at the thread start date and if it fits within my week then it gets considered. If its a thread from the dead I dont bother, although I have seen some material from old old old threads in some WIR's.

Why has the schedule changed? We were on a Weds-Tues schedule.

I've done that because I think there are some old, very good threads that people new to the forums may have not seen. :)

Anywho, just let me know when my week is...and I'll get 'er done. I imagine I'll need "off" in October/November when the baby's due. :spinner:

Toyah seems to be good at doing the rota, I am crap with organizational skills. So pm her and see whats happening.

When I originally started the WIR I was posting on a monday/tues. wednesday is too late in the week methinks.

I absolutely agree with Elle that there's no point in duplicate WIRs being posted. I think I had just assumed that since this was now part of cornsnakes.com "proper" rather than a private forum it was open to all members ... and so anyone who wanted to be on the rota should be. My bad, sorry.

I thought the WIR post date was Monday, with it covering threads from the previous Monday to the Sunday, at least that's what I've done in mine.

I thought post date was Weds and the schedule was Weds - Tues...That's how I've always done mine. :shrugs:

Whomever just figure out whatever and let me know. :crazy02:

That could explain part of the confusion if we're all working on different schedules

ETA: Just as an experiment, I've added the WIR rota I put above for the next 3/4 weeks into the calendar on the site.

Even the time-frames covered by the WIRs seem to be in question. This is the type of thing that needs to be tightened up and organized. Personally, if I were coordinating this thing, I'd have a locked, stickied thread in this forum with a set schedule. I'd also have "alternates" designated from a pool of volunteers. It would be the responsibility of the regular WIR compiler who's scheduled for a specific date to contact the first volunteer alternate on the alternate list as soon as possible if the official compiler was going to be unable to put out their WIR. Volunteer alternates could be rotated as their turns are taken. Example:

Post Date 05/12/08 (covering 05/05 - 05/11): Elle
Post Date 05/19/08 (covering 05/12 - 05/18): Toyah
Post Date 05/26/08 (covering 05/19 - 05/25): Rich
Post Date 06/02/08 (covering 05/26 - 06/01): Stephanie
Post Date 06/09/08 (covering 06/02 - 06/08): Elle
Post Date 06/16/08 (covering 06/09 - 06/15): Toyah

Alternate 1: Nicole (NSF07)
Alternate 2: Biff (Biffster)
Alternate 3: Simone (I<3Corns125)

If Toyah finds that she can't compile the 5/19 WIR, she would contact Nicole. If Nicole is unavailable, she would contact Biff. If Nicole is available and completes the 5/26 WIR, the schedule would be updated (and Nicole would be moved to the bottom of the list of alternates):

Post Date 05/12/08 (covering 05/05 - 05/11): Elle
Post Date 05/19/08 (covering 05/12 - 05/18): Nicole (alternate)
Post Date 05/26/08 (covering 05/19 - 05/25): Rich
Post Date 06/02/08 (covering 05/26 - 06/01): Stephanie
Post Date 06/09/08 (covering 06/02 - 06/08): Elle
Post Date 06/16/08 (covering 06/09 - 06/15): Toyah

Alternate 1: Biff (Biffster)
Alternate 2: Simone (I<3Corns125)
Alternate 3: Nicole (NSF07)

Just a suggestion...

Great suggestion Dean. Like I said, my organization skills are diabolical... I would need help with this or would anyone be willing to do a long term rota like this, post it and I will sticky it.

Honestly, I would like to see some new faces doing the WIR. I do agree that it seems like only select people are "allowed" to do it. I personally volunteered myself MONTHS before I actually got a chance to step in and do one. I have to wonder.... was I only 'allowed' to do the WIR out of necessity?

It's Elle's baby, true, but now it's left the nest, and the idea belongs to the forum as a whole. Anyone who wants a chance to do a WIR should be given a week. We can just make a list of dates and people can sign up. Anyone who is confused should just refer to the list.

I don't feel it's ready to move on and add to the confusion just yet. I think once the 4 current writers have the WIR running smoothly and ontime we can think about expansion. I am more than happy to have more "guest" writers. The WIR was originally my idea to post my personal thoughts on the week at cornsnakes.com. Now it has become 4 other peoples personal week at corn snakes.com. Perhaps some wonder why only the chosen few get to voice their opinions on the week, however anyone is free to write a WIR but in their own personal forums or general chit chat. WIR an official recognised part of cornsnakes.com now, and it needs to have leadership, stability and organization.

WIR is not a popularity contest and I never intended on having anyone else write it. Disagreeing with the 4 chosen permenant writers because other people want a shot is like disagreeing with newspaper columnists. What if I feel I can write a "Help desperate Sally" column every week? That doesn't give me the right to go ahead and do it lol.

I agree that it would be nice to see other peoples ideas etc but we need to have a stable organizational base where people who volunteer can and will eventually have a shot depending on the permenant writers and what they are able to do or not do. WIR is no easy task, it takes hours and can be tedious when searching through a week of posts (of which there are hundreds) to pick out the best content (in that persons opinion).
