Wooden Log Hides...?

EmJagsz

cornscornscorns
I've got two wooden log hides in my snake's tank and I've recently noticed that they both are aquiring some mould on them...Like, there are some blue-ish stuff on them and I'm assuming they're mould.. Before I put the logs in, I had soaked them both in hothothot water to try to clean them, now I'm starting to think that was a bad idea and that the humidity has caused mould to grow on the log hides.

I know I should take them out for the safety of my corn, but should I do anything else? I mean, should I completely clean out the tank and re-do everything clean and new? :shrugs:

Help, please and thank you.

if these are non pet store logs, it is recomended that you leave the logs in some boiling water to clean them of parasites, after being in the water for about 5 minutes u should throw the logs into the over set at 300 degrees for about 15 minutes this will dry it and kill any parasites that may have survived the water.

but please consider buying some pet store logs as they are already clean and not that expensive anyway.

p.s. there should be no bark on the logs if they are logs you gathered yourself if there is bark on them peel it all off

I didn't find the logs, I bought them from a petstore. Although I never boiled them or put them in the oven....All I did was place them in a bucket with hot water and leave them there for a while.

It doesn't matter anyway, I discarded of the logs, cleaned out the viv completely and re-did everything new. Thanks for the tips anyway.

They make those logs out of plastic, if your snakes even like them. I only have a couple that do, because they are too roomy.

I HATE the wooden log hides. I would glady get rid of mine for better hides; they mold, pain to clean, and my snakes don't even like them that much, they like toilet paper rolls better. Unfortunately all I have near me is Petsmart and all they sell is wooden hides, ugh.

That's interesting. I have a log hide that I bought at a reptile show years ago and I have not had any problems with it. My snake sleeps in it all the time. I guess it depends on how much humidity is in your vivarium and who yiou purchase them from. Now I don't like those coconut ones, they are horrible.:nope:

I have a couple outside in the tortoise pen that have been out over a year and they haven't molded, either. The torts can't turn around in them any more, and they can't figure out how to back out, so they just bulldoze the whole hide around in a circle till they are away from the wall and can walk out frontwards.

 Nanci, I have a wonderful mind movie going now - Thanks!

I have wood in most of my vivs. None of it was purchased. All of the pieces were found and cleaned by me. Some are interestingly shaped sections that the snakes use for coiling on or hiding under. Some are branches for climbing. Of course I cleaned them all before using them, and wash, soak, or heat them as needed. My snakes all seem to enjoy their "natural" decor.
